I'm not implying JT should have stayed on, I'm saying he's getting more positive reaction since Trump was elected.

I don't think he would even be getting a more positive reaction tbh. Justin's brand is just too toxic at this moment, if there's any "rally around the flag" bump it'll be much more fleeting than Carney's.

Like this speech in December, it was silly and undiplomatic, given how he threw his female deputy Freeland under the bus and is anointing Carney as his successor:

Trudeau says Kamala Harris's election loss was a setback for women's progress
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/trudeau-kamala-harris-setback-1.7407402

What was the point of that remark other than to piss off Trump and score woke points? It's not like Canada is much more progressive in electing female PMs (we had a Conservative female PM only lasting 5 months).

You don't think the polls would have moved at all assuming JT hadn't stepped down? I would disagree. Obviously the Carney bump is big, and real, but there would be something there to lift JT off the floor regardless.

JT is still Canada's response to Trump and the tariffs, and he's doing a reasonably good job. That is reflected in public opinion to some degree.

How fleeting this all is depends on how long Trump keeps up his insane rhetoric.

I don't think the Justin bump would make the Liberals competitive, and it'll deflate pretty quickly. Nothing like the momentum we're seeing here with Carney. Let's not forget that many voters are weighing other issues as well, and they're not single-issue voters, especially amongst younger Canadians.

Carney is able to keep the momentum going because he's still considered a clean slate on other issues (that's not related to the US relationship) that matter to Canadians like the housing/rental crisis, mass immigration crisis, employment and COL crisis etc.

I think it was designed to pick a fight and it's under mentioned as a cause of all of this.

That said is firing your Finance minister not allowed because she is a woman? Is this an actual feminist argument or just a right wing one that sees an opening?

What's being called out is the hypocrisy of firing your own deputy and trying to sabotage her leadership run, then on the same day call out and criticise the US for not electing a women as President.

Been reading some analysis about the likelihood of a second ballot in the Liberal leadership race and believe it or not if it happens some people think Ruby Dhalla might have a chance. (À la Stéphane Dion, I guess?)

If Freeland and Gould drop off for the second round and rally to Dhalla, she could make a run of it.

Word is the Liberal braintrust really really doesn't want any risk of this happening.

Though her lack of French may keep her out of the French candidates' debate. Not sure that it officially disqualifies her from the race though.

Dhalla continues to claim that she should have a right to a personal translator for the French debate, even though the party has refused so far.

This sort of defeats the purpose of a second debate in French.

Isn't a large part of the rationale for such an event to demonstrate proficiency in the French language????

There is a ranked ballot is there not? Thus no momentum swing towards Dion. Actually I think that was the death knell of the convention in Canada so shocking the result was.

It's easy to see why right-wingers believe in conspiracy theories particularly when it comes to the media, I mean how many media outlets played the speech Trudeau gave where he announced his fondness for China before he was elected PM? Almost no one today remembers or knows about that but that should have sunk his campaign right then and there

Voting doesn't open for 6 days so I haven't seen what it looks like yet, but as far as I know, it's a ranked ballot, so there really isn't a chance for Freeland and Gould to drop off if they happen to be in 2nd and 3rd place. 4th place would be dropped and their votes get redistributed based on the voters' ranking (if they do rank, some people for some reason in ranked ballots feel that selecting 2nd and 3rd choices somehow hurts their first choice. This was something we saw in the 2014 election in London that had ranked ballots). Candidates don't get the chance to "cross the floor and take their support with them" like delegated conventions.

No, he was part of the government for almost 10, starting a couple years after he was first elected.

Perhaps Justin needs to answer the question was it a set-back for women in Canada when he was elected Liberal leader over four women who were running? Plus, was it a setback for women when Chretien was elected over Campbell? Plus, up to this point in time, the Liberals are the only federal party which has never had a female leader.

I'm not saying it's true but the feeling is widespread that Kamala lost because she is a women following Hilary's loss that was also because she was a woman. Especially among Canadians who didn't follow as carefully some of Kamala's horrible media appearances. Nobody thinks Campbell lost because she was a women and certainly nobody thinks Trudeau ran away with the Leadership campaign because Liberals didn't want to choose a woman. Trudeau had set Freeland up to replace him. The time to do that would have seemed to be in 2023 but the life of a former PM is pretty limited so not too surprising he didn't want to leave.

You are intentionally missing the point. Trump's policies are designed to remove women reproductive rights while Harris policies would have improve them.
There was no such dynamic between Chretien and Campbell

It was said after the election. So it was not Canadian interference in a US election. He did not have to say it and should have likely waited until after he was out of office before saying it.

That said, getting under Trumps skill is a positive. Especially at a point in time where Trump was refusing to return JT calls and still going full forward on tariffs. Would there be other more direct way of getting Trump to take notice? Perhaps.

No one has inferred the possibility of Canadian interference in a US election except you. Not sure why you're trying to minimise the situation with this irrelevant talking point.

What's being called out is the hypocrisy of the one delivering this message, given that Trudeau's government isn't setting a better example. It's literally throwing stones from a glass house.

Getting under his skin is likely a big reason why a highly distracted President seems to have an unhealthy obsession with Canada in his first 100 days in office. My bet is that the electorate believes that PM Carney won't make such foolish moves if he succeeds Trudeau and wins the subsequent election. At least that's the hope, but I guess it's always a wildcard if your key political operatives are the TruAnon idiot duo Katie Telford and Gerald Butts.

Thanks - here's a report:

CBC - Ruby Dhalla kicked out of Liberal leadership race: source

Quote:
A Liberal Party of Canada committee has voted unanimously to disqualify former MP Ruby Dhalla from the race to be the next leader, according to a source.

That source, who was not authorized to speak on the record, said a special joint committee met and voted Friday afternoon to remove Dhalla for violating the race's rules.

She faced 12 allegations, including accepting donations from a corporation in the form of payments to campaign staff, the source said.

Dhalla was accused of failing to disclose the involvement of a non-Canadian citizen in her campaign, which the party alleges would amount to foreign interference if it happened during an election period.
