But in all honesty, I wouldn't be surprised if most of the time they are purposely misunderstanding the explanations given by administration. I feel sorry for the city staff that have to explain themselves over and over again while being interrupted repeatedly.

Vike, I could see your frustration sitting on the bench while Russ Wyatt rambles on about "why is the proponent presenting if the city is the applicant and there is no official agreement", when a perfectly reasonable explanation had been given in the administration's summary of the file at the beginning of the hearing.
Voter turnout was only 37% in the last municipal election:

I don't know if I'd call them "progressives" as someone who advocates for social reform will find some way of making their voice heard. A true "progressive" would know that not voting simply reinforces the status quo.

Municipal government can be perceived as unimportant by the general population, but it can have the greatest effect on our daily life. More awareness should be spread to encourage greater voter turnout.

I know we're getting off topic from the Granite thread here. But the Lemay Forest ongoing saga was before Riel committee in the last couple days. There's post on my FB from organizers about how insensitive, etc the committee meeting was. There was no land acknowledgement for example. They were expecting a grand emotional proclamation from the committee. But instead they got someone reading a document (city clerk). Which ya, is what committee meetings tend to be. Government is non-emotional in most cases based on fact. Most people find that boring and is why they don't pay attention. Civic politics especially is boring, but important.

Lol at the land acknowledgment thing, it's a symbolic gesture at the best of times. NIMBYs leave no straw un-grasped at.

Agreed. Low voter turnout is baffling. That's how you end up with disastrous "leaders" like Katz.

EPC approved with a condition to sort out parking agreement between the club and the city. Hopefully they can sort this out and make it win-win. Still has to go for full council approval.

just watched it. Pretty uneventful....the drama will be at council. Seems like some will be opposed to sole sourcing to UWCRC.

Can’t believe the city capitulated to parking when their current central message is “housing housing housing”. Leaving it to the developer and the club is the biggest cop-out ever and shows weak leadership.

Granite is blowing this all out of proportion. It's my understanding that they stand to lose only 5 parking spots. I also heard that they actually rent out some UNUSED spots to Canada Life employees.

Visit link below to send pre-written letter to city hall. I actually got confirmation of receipt from the office of mayor Gillingham.

EPC unanimously passed the subdivision of the city-owned Granite Curling Club parking lot:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/...rdable-housing-parking-lot-epc-1.7461992

The article mentions two more steps; a vote of the full city council, and the possible appeal to the provincial Manitoba Municipal Board.

Nothing's set in stone, but it seems like there's a good chance this will move forward. If it goes to the Municipal Board, I can't see an NDP government board voting against affordable housing over convenient parking.

I thought that board was dissolved, or is to be dissolved.

Nah. The province is reviewing planning legislation right now and I can see them taking away some of the scenarios that things can be appealed to the municipal board but I can't see them dissolving the board entirely.

The municipal board hardly ever dealt with Winnipeg planning issues until Pallister starting screwing around with planning in the city and opened the door for a bunch of things to be appealed to the board.

Nope. They've been around forever. They spend most of their time doing property assessment appeals for other municipalities (similar to Wpg's board of revision). They always dealt with a bunch of stuff under the planning act but Pallister sent a whole bunch of Winnipeg stuff their way too. He thought this was sticking it to the City, but it ended up being a nightmare for developers.

I'm thinking of this thing. And they did in fact rule on that Charleswood golf course apartment thing? Maybe? Edit: It was the Roblin apartments and it was the municipal board.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/manitoba-winnipeg-planning-1.5405503

I think I'm just mixing it up ..
