Mayor Ken Sim to boycott Metro Vancouver Regional District

Jan 30 2025

Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim is taking a tough stance against Metro Vancouver Regional District, announcing he will boycott his participation in the regional government.

“Metro Vancouver’s governance is broken. Moving forward, I will not be attending Metro meetings and supporting a system that lacks accountability,” said Sim in a statement to Daily Hive Urbanized today...

...“Metro Vancouver’s lack of good governance and transparency needs to be addressed. I applaud Councillor Kash Heed’s principled stand in declining his meeting stipend. Metro Vancouver’s costs to taxpayers and Vancouverites are out of control. We need real, meaningful change more than ever,” continued Sim....

Stephen Quinn reported on CBC this morning that they tried to get a comment from Ken Sim about this, but he was unable to provide one as he's at a bitcoin conference in South America.

And that boycotting was useless if other councillors still attend? I only caught half of it

Global noted he barely attends them overall as it is, so it's meaningless.

Not to say whether it's an acceptable rate or not, but I read that Kennedy Steward had roughly the same attendance rate.

Question: Is the provincial government able to enforce salary caps and benefit clawbacks on civic boards and council or does it require a recommendation from an independent report? You'd think that once folks are making more the the premier that threatening them with a maximum salary would make them uncomfortable.

I don't know if there's a good reason why important civic politicians and employees necessarily must make less than the premier. I've worked at places where the most critical employees took home more than the CEO did. Isn't the whole hubbub about Metro Vancouver salaries that each job doesn't actually pay a huge salary, but certain politicians sit on multiple boards and wear many hats which means they draw multiple salaries?

ABC Vancouver boots Rebecca Bligh from council caucus
By Simon Little Global News

Vancouver’s governing municipal political party has booted one of its city councillors from caucus.

In a statement issued Friday, ABC Vancouver said it had expelled Coun. Rebecca Bligh

“While she remains a Vancouver City Councillor, it has become clear that she is not aligned with the shared priorities and team-oriented approach that defines ABC Vancouver,” party president Stephen Molnar wrote…

Council by-election candidate list is up.
ABC and TEAM both have two candidates; OneCity, COPE, and the Greens all have one.
Also Rollergirl!

I feel like voting in Sean Orr of COPE would be good just for the fireworks it might produce with ABC.

Saw my first election sign today in East Vancouver. Big sign on a bus route endorsing ABC.

ABC might have just thrown that sign up without asking first, it appears they have a policy of just putting up signs on homes of people who supported them in 2022 instead of waiting for people to request signs.

Audio leaked of Vancouver byelection candidate discussing running mate

By Troy Charles & Amy Judd Global News
Posted March 21, 2025 3:52 pm
Global News has obtained audio of an ABC candidate in Vancouver’s upcoming byelection speaking about his running mate.

Tech business leader, Jamie Stein, is running with Ralph Kaisers who is the head of the Vancouver Police Union.

In the audio, which is from an event at the University of British Columbia on March 11, Stein ponders if running alongside Kaisers is the biggest mistake of his life.

“The only negative tweets I get are, ‘Why are you running with Ralph?'” Stein can be heard saying in the audio.

“I just knew that he was always getting into trouble on Twitter.”

The most laughable one was putting a sign up on Rebecca Bligh's parents' lawn this time.

Candidates for Vancouver Municipal Party Say They Attended Multiple Events with Conspiratorial Far-Right Groups By Accident
Two candidates for ‘TEAM Vancouver’ in upcoming by-election appeared at event with far-right groups

by Rumneek Johal, Reporter
March 24, 2025

A Vancouver municipal party running two candidates in an upcoming by-election for Vancouver city council say their appearance at multiple events organized by conspiratorial far-right groups over the span of two years was just an accident.

TEAM for a Livable Vancouver, a municipal party that splintered off from the now-defunct right-wing Non-Partisan Association (NPA), is running two candidates in the upcoming by-election – Colleen Hardwick and Theodore Abbott.

“I went to the town hall to support my grandma who was speaking at the event,” Abbott told PressProgress. “I have zero ties with any convoy-affiliated groups and any suggestion otherwise is simply a misrepresentation of the truth.”

At the BC Rising event, Brian Palmquist, a Vancouver-based architect spoke about housing as a panelist and said he was attending the event as a representative for TEAM.

During a Q&A, Abbott asked the panelists a question about the various provincial acts being discussed at the town hall relating to public health being controlled by tyrants.

In a clip from the town hall, Abbott inquires about the presence of “unelected bureaucrats,” who he believes are present at the municipal level, and whether or not they will also be involved at the provincial level as part of a “tyrannical power grab.”

Meanwhile ABC candidates cannot be bothered to attend any of the All Candidates meetings. Why hide from voters?

Uh-oh.

ABC Vancouver's 'repudiation of the rule of law' shows gap in B.C.'s municipal oversight, Ombudsperson says
Dan Fumano: B.C. Ombudsperson says B.C. needs to take action on municipal codes of conduct. Jay Chalke was "deeply concerned" by comments from ABC president Stephen Molnar.

B.C.’s public-sector watchdog has called out the president of Vancouver’s ruling party for openly flouting the city’s integrity commissioner, calling it “a disturbing repudiation of the rule of law.”

Recent developments out of Vancouver City Hall have highlighted the need for the provincial government to step up and ensure effective oversight of municipal misconduct, B.C. Ombudsperson Jay Chalke wrote this week in a letter to provincial Housing and Municipal Affairs Minister Ravi Kahlon.

Chalke wrote he was “deeply concerned” by comments from ABC president Stephen Molnar, as quoted last month by Postmedia News, saying the party planned to continue caucusing privately despite the city’s integrity commissioner ruling that such meetings constituted improper backroom decision-making....

Hell No, Peter.

If one wants a vote become a citizen. It was a 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 idea when Gregor the Dim proposed it and it still is.

Should permanent residents be allowed to vote in Vancouver civic elections?
Coun. Peter Meiszner: "I am in favour of exploring it and looking at all the implications, pros and cons. It's a conversation worth reigniting."

Should permanent residents be allowed to vote in Vancouver civic elections?

The previous Gregor Robertson-led council answered yes in 2018 when a unanimous vote sent a request to the provincial government to amend the Vancouver Charter to extend voting rights to an estimated 60,000 permanent residents.

The Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) made the same request in 2019.

In both cases, the provincial government rejected the requests, arguing then — and via an email Tuesday from the Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs — that Canadian citizenship is a requirement to be eligible to vote in either British Columbia provincial elections or Canadian federal elections....

I guess nobody here showed up to vote? I don’t see any comments about the disgracefully long line ups at pretty much all of the polling stations. Kudos to my other fellow residents who literally waited hours to exercise their democratic right which Ken Sim and the amateur hour at City Hall seemed determined to thwart.

I went to vote (1 Kingsway) and the line up was hundreds of people around three sides of the block. I waited a bit and it didn't move, it looked like a two hour wait or more, so I left. This city is so unprepared, they don't care if people vote, but there must be a lot of angry people to wait that long.
