Google says troop ratios to hold occupation are one per 50 to 100 population. Is that accurate? If so, I'm getting 70,000 to 140,000 USA troops required to hold. USA regular force troop numbers are about 650k across marines (177k) and army (473k). That excludes Navy and Airforce for obvious occupation reasons. So I'm getting about 10-20% of applicable USA troops to hold the prairies. Accurate?

20:1 was mentioned but in a highly developed country like Canada, you'd probably need more. That said, they wouldn't need to occupy much, blockades of the coasts would effectively stifle out economy. Tactically, you want a minimum of 3:1 attacker-defender in Western doctrine. So a section attacks a fireteam, a platoon attacks a section, a company attacks a platoon, etc. So if we can hypothetically mount a defence with 10,000-20,000 troops (a division) on the line, the Americans would need a Corps to attack comfortably, which wouldn't be too much aggravation for them to muster.
