YYC's 101st non-stop destination of 2025 is... MEX. Maybe 4th time is the charm? (It will be the 4th attempt in the past 10 years).

Didn't see this one coming and wouldn't have believed it if you mentioned it 2 weeks ago.

https://www.westjet.com/en-ca/news/2025/...ary-route-set-to-take-off-in-summer-2025

It's timed different from last time when WS ran it as part of its morning bank similar to the other Mexican destinations. Timed this time with connections on both ends in mind.

WS2200 YYC 19:45 - 00:58+1 MEX 737 13457
WS2215 MEX 01:55 - 07:15 YYC 737 12456

Runs 4-5x weekly until end of October. Perhaps this is the time it finally sticks?

That’s great!

Also WS WestJet today announced a 1x weekly Calgary YYC - New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) for Summer 2025, operating on Saturdays from May 24-August 30 .

WS adding it, is a response to AA American Airlines also adding the YYC - LGA route 1x weekly operating on Saturdays, from June 7th to end of August✅

https://www.paxnews.com/news/airline/wes...y-new-york-laguardia-flights-summer-2025

With that YYC - NYC area has 16x weekly flights
AC Air Canada YYC- Newark EWR 7x weekly
WS WestJet YYC- New York JFK 7x weekly
WS WestJet YYC - New York LaGuardia LGA 1x weekly
AA American Airlines YYC - New York LaGuardia LGA 1x weekly

Why is it only once a week on both WS and AA? Lack of aircraft for increased frequency or another reason?

A 1984 "perimeter rule" implemented by PANYNJ bars flights to and from points farther than 1,500 mi (2,400 km), except on Saturdays or to Denver.

Thanks to you, I was able to get further information from here: https://avgeeks.aero/laguardia-perimeter-rule/

A bit more detail regarding the perimeter rule.

Interesting that WS WestJet Calgary YYC - Orlando MCO - YYC route is 1x daily in (S25).

Has YYC ever had a Florida route running daily flights ✈️during previous Summer seasons?
I know winter seasons it’s a yes✅.

Also from May 17- August 30 for S25 on (Saturdays) there are 3 daily flights on YYC - Atlanta ATL- YYC.

So the Calgary Airport has gotten rid of the golf cart busses and replaced them with regular golf carts that hold less people and are absolutely terrible at carrying luggage. I'm not sure if they're getting ready to rip out the entire track and just go to the traditional airport setup of having golf carts drive reduced mobility people directly to their gate. Whatever their end game is, the new setup is the worst of both worlds.

So our exorbitant passenger fees are going towards an inferior passenger experience? The new CEO seems to be starting out on the wrong foot!

A recent flyer said that they were told that the company making (or maybe servicing) the carts they were using is out of business, making repairs, maintenance and replacements a problem. They were told the golf carts are it for now, and eventually they'll yank out the whole track.

The existing moving walkways are down for repairs all the time, so hopefully those get replaced. I flew quite a bit last year and it was very rare that the carts were faster than the walkways, even on longer jaunts between A and C/D.

I did see these carts yesterday when I landed. They have small luggage racks on the back and seem to be able to seat 5 passengers so if they get enough of them it might work, especially if they can find a way to take them into the concourses without disrupting walking passengers.

Good riddance.

Those ridiculous tracks are space hogs in areas where the user experience is awful.

They take up almost as much space as a proper, high capacity airport tram or train would require (think MSP, IAH, DFW) … but instead only carry a tiny fraction of the passengers, and almost always turn riders away at the B and C stops.

Hopefully removing the track also gives them the ability to renovate - and fix - the connector between C and D/E.

And to add more seating in the A2x gate areas.

I am in the airport once a month, sometimes more for work travel and while I never connect in YYC (home airport) its just a bay layout for connections. I get what they were trying to do but the execution is horrid.

The carts block people coming in from C and B(when it was open), they still don't really go all the way to C/D, never make sense if your connecting domestically, take up way too much space, frequencies all over the place.

The airport is just too wide for current use and something should be done. No idea what that is but might just be use B peir substantially more to cut down on walks and connections when that reopens in 2026.

As far as I'm aware the track has been opened up to foot traffic too, and I see they even removed some of the barriers around it.

Porter Airlines adding Calgary YYC - Hamilton YHM from June 11- end November, up to 1x daily for (S25).

Wonder *if* WestJet retaliates by quietly upping Calgary YYC - Hamilton YHM to 2x daily for S25 eventually at some point? As (currently is scheduled 1x daily). Will see.
