Looks like the stats I referenced were a bit outdated.
Montreal and Sept-Iles seem to be ahead of Saint John now in total tonnage, and Montreal, of course, remains the second largest container port, after Vancouver. Port Saint John’s total tonnage remains dominated by liquid bulk, but it’s currently investing in a
major push to expand its container operations up to 800k TEUS and possibly beyond. Which would maybe be enough to catch back up with Montreal in terms of total tonnage.
Coincidentally, 14.4 hectares of Port Saint John’s prime harbourfront is unavailable for container operations, holding back Port SJ from going beyond 800k TEUS, because they are occupied by
Montreal owned AIM's seaside scrapyard which is
currently in legal limbo due to multiple worker deaths, a
major fire in 2023 which led to a region wide
state of emergency to be called due to toxic air pollution, and a 40 year lease that both the Port and province of NB would like to terminate. AIM's CEO, Herb
"I'm not God" Black, is still trying to fight for AIM to reopen their disastrous facilities on the Saint John harbourfront.
If either Energy East got built, or an LNG
export facility was added in addition to the current LNG import facility, I think Saint John would likely secure the second place spot for total tonnage among Canadian ports for decades.
