Truth is, that Carney being there is still the same old corrupt Liberal Party, no thanks! Most Canadians I'm sure will see it the same. Things are still unaffordable and a mess and the Liberals aren't helping. We've had enough!
Well, do you have any evidence to support your claim that he did a “trash job” as the Governor of the Bank of England?

I certainly don’t think you’ll find any evidence that he did a “trash job” while serving as the Governor of the Bank of Canada either. His success as Governor of the Bank of Canada is quite literally what got him the bigger job with the Bank of England.

Liz Truss spelled it out, about what he did when being in charge of the Bank of England. There's plenty of editorials and articles. You can stop deflecting though with Carney, it's not about him, but the entire party. Changing a handful of people isn't enough.

Like this election, a lot of conservatives more than likely didn't show up to vote for Blaine Higgs, even they wanted a change, more than likely they will show up next election. Liberals should do they same here even if for just one election to get rid of this trash government, but I'm sure that I'm asking for too much. This government has to go.

You realize Carney isn't part of the current liberal party right? A consultant for Trudeau because of his experience. He's also much closer to center left than anyone else in the running. You just want PP in power they couldn't have put anyone forward that you would have approved of. Also he made a lot of important changes to the bank of England and there is nothing negative about him I can find so the onus is on you if you think he was so hated during his tenure in the UK.

Whoever is selected as the next Liberal leader (Carney or Freeland it appears so far), is effectively stepping into the PM role? I'm assuming this would be a major reason both Carney and Freeland are trying to get the nomination. They would get to be PM, likely only for a few months.

Even if you're a placeholder, I'm guessing there's lifetime benefits that come along with the PM role (tangible and non-tangible).

Either one of them could be Lib leader, lose, then hang around a little bit until the next Liberal leadership convention.

Would that be right?

Depends on polling firm. Abacus is not showing any appreciable changes. We really need Leger to step in and give us a poll that we can actually have faith in.

Yes, whoever wins the Liberal leadership will become PM. How long he or she holds the office remains to be seen.

I suspect both Carney and Freeland would running with the intend to hang around and contest the 2029 election regardless of this year's results. If either of them keep the Liberals at a better seat count than the worst case scenario of 40-60 that has been talked about I think their position would be secure if they wanted to stay. At this point a PC majority of less than 200 seats would probably seem like a win for the Liberals

The other thing is while Poilievre has been effective in house debates and as an opposition leader but I'm still not sure how or successful he will be e at governing. It's not totally unimaginable that he could be a one term PM.

I don't care about Carney, your right though. It doesn't matter who they push forward, that party needs to be gutted before I would give them a chance. One man/woman at the head isn't enough for change.

A leader change is absolutely an indicator of a party change.

The liberals in NB have changed to more pragmatic and competent so far under Holt. The PC's changed dramatically under Higgs. The federal liberals changed under Trudeau, the NDP has changed under Jagmeet.

While we have a parliamentary system, the MLAs and MP's still rally behind the party leader, which means the leader chooses the direction the party takes. Hopefully, if the leader is strong they will take input from their caucus and also from third party stakeholders on issues.

Thumbs up Mark Carney visits Saint John, NB | Canada’s next Prime Minister?

Port Saint John had quite an important visitor yesterday, the man likely to become Canada’s next Prime Minister, Mark Carney. Great to see him come to Saint John and speak to the important of Port Saint John to Canada’s national interests at this critical time in our history. Carney also had an event later in the evening in Uptown Saint John.

Here’s a link to Carney’s post on Instagram:

It seems Wayne Long is all in for Carney, and all in for a reelection bid.

Given the red wave that swept through the Kennebecasis Valley like a tsunami last October and a change in the riding that saw the West Side swapped out for Quispamsis, I think Wayne has a pretty good chance to be re-elected under the Carney led Liberals.

I have a feeling we’ll see Carney back in the port city before the election.

I think it’s funny Wayne Long couldn’t even say , “Trudeau’s call”

A little petty… 😅, but probably smart.

Canadians have really seemed to give Trudeau props for sticking up to Trump though, and, of course, for finally stepping down.

I expect you'll see a lot of formerly adoring acolytes of St. Justin going from enthusiastically nodding heads and clapping like trained seals in the house to "Justin who?, oh him. Yeah, I never really liked the guy"

Doesn't really apply to Long as he had more backbone than 90% of the Liberal caucus.

Exclamation Trump attacks Governor of Maine, Janet Mills

Video Link

Surprised this wasn't posted on here or on the main Canada forum yet... this exchange was absolutely BONKERS. Say what you want about trans girls/women competing in female sports... this exchange was beyond flagrant, and just makes him look like an absolute ass.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was a direct consequence of Gov. Mills having the audacity to stick up for state in response Trump's bombastic attack. Perhaps Trump's also read that Maine is the state in the union that would most like to to join Canada.

Well, it wouldn't happen, but I'm sure we would welcome our Mainiac neighbours as the 11th state and 4th Maritime Province. Hell, we'd welcome New Hampshire and Vermont at the same time as #12 and #13 too. Beyond that would take some more negotiations I'm sure.

Going with my theme of amalgamation being the key to make New Brunswick better... NB and Maine combining would make quite an interesting province with a lot of map presence, and make us feel a little less small compared to the gargantuan provinces of Quebec and Ontario.

NH and Vermont joining Canada would be interesting too, but somehow Maine just seems more possible geographically, as Canada already surrounds most of its land borders. Obviously it's incredibly unlikely, as there's no mechanism for a US state to secede from the Union, and Trump won't be selling.

The return of passenger rail service and a new leg of the TCH across northern Maine could solve the 150+ year challenge of northern Maine separating most of New Brunswick from the rest of Canada. Even if the "New Maineswick" union never happens, perhaps we will see some sort of economic union, currency union, or open borders with the US in the future... meaning more integration and connections with our neighbours in New England.

The return of passenger rail service between Montreal and Saint John across Maine would be a worthy venture for New Brunswick, Maine, and Quebec, but a bus service could be up and running in a fraction of the time and at a fraction of the cost of passenger rail. Just because Donald Dummy is in the white house for 4 more years shouldn't mean NB should abandon the relationship with its closest neighbour for the duration of his second Presidency.

Watching Maine's governor get attacked from Trump like that makes me feel like it wouldn't actually be such a bad thing to take a trip to Maine during these very strange times between our two countries, but I wouldn't be making any stops until I hit Bangor, or the Maine coastal highway.

The last time I drove the Airline highway, after Trump's 2020 loss, I saw multiple Trump flags still up flying along the route, and when I stopped for gas and snacks the vibes felt more like West Virginia or Mississippi than Maine 😅 , but I guess that's just Appalachia... New Brunswick isn't much different in some parts.

Donald Trump won't be President forever, I hope 4 more years of him in the White House doesn't mean 4 years of unproductive relations between New Brunswick/Maine and The Maritimes/New England. I think MonctonRad was right to correct me in another thread that Nova Scotia should continue to send a Christmas tree to Boston, despite Trump's craziness.

It would be great if Nova Scotia wrapped up the tree in gigantic Canadian flag this year, and include some big, maple leaf ornaments.

When Carney visits Vancouver, Montreal, Halifax, St. John's, don't think he will mention anything about his platform building Saint John to be the strongest port city in the G7. Likely his platform will be "insert city name here"; so when he is in Vancouver, it will be about building Vancouver as the strongest port in the G7; same for Halifax, etc.

Has Carney even said that? I thought those were the words of the usually overenthusiastic MP, Wayne Long...

I think Carney will continue to mention the importance of investing in and expanding Canada's ports whenever applicable online, and on the campaign trail.

Fyi, Ozabald, Carney once again featured Port Saint John on his instagram storey again, yesterday:

I think we will likely see Mark Carney visit the Port City again a few times before election day. PP has been no stranger to Saint John, either. Probably of greatest interest to you, PP is also aware of, and pointed out the Saint John/St. John's confusion.

I think both parties believe the riding is winnable for their parties, and Saint John-Kennebecasis going to be a much closer race than many of us would have predicted only a month or two ago. Should be an interesting election here in the port city... possibly even on both sides of the harbour.
