I thought Canadian grocery stores were the bad guys? Hard to keep things straight these days...

Is Galen Weston supposed to be a hero now?

I remember that one very well.

Did Peavey Mart have a jingle? I can't recall.

I guess they can erect a statue of Galen Weston beside our other beloved Canadian hero, Ted Rogers.

My local radio listening is down to an hour or so in the morning but I can't honestly say I have ever heard any Peavey Mart advertising.

I don't think we have Peavey Mart in BC. I used to go to one in Alberta once in a while, the prices weren't that competitive for items other stores carried but they were good for interesting bits.

If we shop at a grocery store it's often Whole Foods, and often for fresh fruit and veggies where you can see the origin anyway. You can still shop at grocery stores and make sure you are buying Canadian grown produce, or packaged food (the source of ingredients can get murky though).

Search out farmers markets, find local CSAs.

There are a few in the BC Interior/North. There's a fairly large one on the Alaska Highway in Dawson Creek.

I'm not fan of Bezos, but is Weston any better?

The point is that local stores, even giant grocery chains, buy lots of things from local producers. You can indirectly support those producers no matter where you shop. WF has quality product and it's easy to see where it came from. I'm not sure about Walmart.

Whole Foods is actually a pretty good place to work in that industry, so I'm told. Costco is the clear #1 of course.

Next time I will talk instead about Bezos's $500 million yacht. Almost like a caricature of Bond villain. Who needs hair when you have this?

A Yacht? Bezos envisions a pristine Earth with all the dirty jobs moved onto massive space stations. Billionaires inhabiting the Earth with everyone else on cramped, dirty stations. That's a Bond villain.

Trump's a business buffoon. The only plausible outcome from his prolific Trumpian dictatorship is the MAGA movement realisation to turn against their saviour.

The Canadian government threatening with tarriffs of their own setting off a trade war is asinine. We're not on equal footing.

Trump enacts a full trade war with Canada and many of the forumers here will be still shopping at Walmart, Costco, Whole Foods and saying "so what"

I'm not a big Weston fan, but for me the Westons aren't the same degree of bad. The biggest issue I have with Bezos is being blatantly anti-union and interfered with many attempts to unionize (and mis-treating low-level employees beyond mere low wages) while many Weston stores have unions.

The only two grocery stores where I live that are unionized are No Frills and Your Independent Grocer. Both are franchisee-owned by still part of Loblaws. They are also the best stores for appearance and selection. Our Metro, Food Basics and Foodland have kind of gone downhill as they don't pay well and have high staff turnover.
