Book loving couple turns the page at Saskatoon's Westgate Books

Jeremy Warren
CBC News
Jan 5, 2025

The stockroom at Westgate Books is tidier than it's been in years.

The Saskatoon used bookstore has new owners. Luke Syrnick and his partner were regular customers before buying the store in spring 2024.

Their first big task was to organize the inventory of 100,000 books. The previous owner kept the store's inventory in his head. Syrnick and his partner are installing an electronic inventory system this year to facilitate searches and requests for hard-to-find books.

Lots of unique little stories in this thread. Thanks everybody! It's great to hear of so many people following their passions and still trying to establish or continue on with passion for a business dream. Saskatoon has a fantastic vibe this way.

On another topic, I'm not sure if I will... I gave up eating pork and beef many moons ago, but I feel I'm about to fall off the wagon for a hamburger. Beef, of course. If I do, any recommendations for my first burger in 17 years?

I feel like an enabler by making suggestions but the top options would be Goblin's Grill, ACE Burger, Carson's Q, or Congress House.

Thanks for the suggestions, thenetstud. I was thinking Ace Burger. Looks like everyone else went vegan just as I'm coming off the plow. Haha. Cheers, mate!

Great that they chose downtown! Dying MEC replaced by Mountain Warehouse. I'm pumped and will try to support them as much as possible. I need a few things. Now to delve into their inventory....

Just one more note, and I've mentioned it before. Downtown retailers can even the playing field with the suburbs by simply offering free parking if you buy something of a particular value. For example, you spend $100 at a store at midtown, and you're parked in the parkade, then that gives you 3 hours of free parking. Or do they have that already? I never drive....

Free parking city wide, or charge city wide. Why harm downtown where you want people to go?

Odd Couple is teasing on their social media that their new restaurant, Sulu, is opening sometime soon in the old Sticks & Stones/F&B location on 2nd. Nice to see a continued investment downtown, which is just what this neighborhood needs.

That block is doing a lot of the heavy lifting for Downtown nightlife and vibrancy these days. The same cannot be said for the rest of 2nd Ave.

Mentioned in the Regina Retail thread, but not here, is the pending closure of Peavy Mart stores everywhere. I'll definitely miss Peavy mart. They provide a wide variety of goods at affordable prices with greater product knowledge from staff that what I experience at the big box hardware stores.

If Princess Auto shuts down, we'll be truly screwed.

New businesses downtown

In June we saw the Library break ground on their new Downtown Central location, scheduled to be completed in 2027. The Downtown district also saw 92 new businesses open. 17 new food options joined the district with 21 new retail destinations now calling Downtown home. 33 new health and beauty businesses also joined the district as well as 21 within the service and organization field.

There was no mention of how many closed during that time period but this is good news overall.

In light of everything that is going in in North American politics, it is great to see a Canadian company launching a store in Saskatoon.
On that note, as challenging as it can be, I would certainly encourage my fellow posters on here to do their best to shop local/Canadian if possible.

Saskatoon Retail Construction Shows Untapped Potential in Growing City

January 21, 2025
CBRE

Saskatoon is having a major growth spurt. The city welcomed nearly 15,000 new residents between October 2022 and October 2023, pushing the Saskatoon Metropolitan Area population over 350,000. The city is increasingly popular thanks to Saskatchewan’s low cost of living, abundant job opportunities and a strong economy driven by agriculture, potash and uranium.

This population boom is having knock-on effects on real estate, especially on Saskatoon’s east side. Over the last few years the area has seen infrastructure, housing and retail projects spring up. Citylife Market, Saskatoon’s newest retail power centre, is the latest evidence of this transformation. The centre, spanning 177,610 sq. ft., is shadow-anchored by Saskatoon’s second Costco.

Final sale for Saskatoon's first family of fashion

Ultimo Euromoda clothing store closing after death of owner Barry Flynn

by Jeremy Warren
CBC News
February 16, 2025

Kael Flynn is the scion of a Saskatoon fashion dynasty, but the 22-year-old is more concerned with perfecting his curveball than selling suits.

His father, Barry Flynn, owner of clothing store Ultimo Euromoda, died in December, about eight months after the death of Kael's grandfather, long-time clothing retailer Elwood Flynn. Ultimo is closing at the end of February, leaving Saskatoon without a Flynn-owned store for the first time since 1956.
