How long has that model been up? It's strange that they would use an image from a couple years ago for the renders.

It’s a picture of a model, doesn’t mean that’s exactly what they will build. Vornado has changed designs many times already.

Nothing new, just another look back at one of Foster's designs from a video by DBOX...

https://dbox.com/

Also in the video, this mystery model, which appears to be on Broadway in lower Manhattan...

^ I have no idea what that is supposed to be but it's an absurdly huge behemoth that looks like two full blocks bounded by Bway, Cedar, Nassau and Wall. A bunch of classic buildings sit there including the Equitable Bldg so there isn't a chance in hell this is real. It also looks like it could be the NYSE block which also has no chance of happening. I have no idea why anyone would waste time on some vision concept for any site like this. Weird weird weird.

I think that's a model of One Wall Street atop a giant pedestal to make it visible in-the-round.

And that's exactly where it is.

This is interesting. It seems that Vornado is getting realistic and acknowledging that a 2.5 M SF tower in this shoddy spot might not be viable for quite some time. This area has a lot of potential, but dramatic clean up is essential before tenants will pay $200/sf here.

Manhattan's Transformed Penn District: Retail's Next Big Bet
Story by David Moin

"In 2023, Vornado demolished the old Pennsylvania Hotel on Seventh Avenue between 32nd and 33rd Streets, leaving a vacant 80,000-square-foot parcel. "We're strategizing on that site," Weiss said. 'It could be office. It could be residential. It could be retail. It could be a hotel. It could be a mix of all that. We could build 2.5 million square feet there,'" as allowed by the zoning.

The article also says the pedestrian promenade along 33rd street will be extended to 9th Ave. So 33rd will be fully pedestrianized from 7th to 9th Avenues. I hope this will expand further.

I could see 33rd Street pedestrianized from Fifth Ave. to Hudson Yards. That would be a great corridor.

Been telling people & the broken chat bots for years that this is the location of the new Madison Square Garden it only makes sense for location and economically. The place is kind of a dump anyway right now and it's only getting older.

This won't happen, but I'd like to see a new MSG on the Hotel Penn site (including the junk on 34th St) that looks like this.

NYguy disagrees.

He'll be here in a second to assure us it will never happen.

For the record I think he is wrong and have been saying so for a long time.

Only bigger.

But I have to admit I don't have a huge interest in insisting it be some neo-classical homage to old Penn or old MSG. I think something completely of this time would be more appropriate.

There are a multitude of advantages to a new [32/34/7/6] MSG, many of them obviously transportation related. It could provide essentially a grand underground concourse from Herald Square into Penn Station, and could even be done in conjunction with a huge renovation and expansion of the 34 St/Herald Square Station complex to become the first-world transportation interchange it deserves to be. The addition of tracks and platforms for Penn would even be a possibility.

I’d like to see a Neoclassical MSG. Modern arenas largely look lame in my opinion, especially if they’re on in a confined space like a new MSG would be.

^This would be so urban in form and massing, it wouldn't be obvious it even was an arena. Towers could potentially anchor the corners (stepping down to B'way/6th) and 33 St could run under and bridged arena space.

My personal opinion is the state money has already been spent and committed to significant projects, including LaGuardia, JFK airport, 2nd ave subway and CBTC projects, bus authority terminal, and gateway project improvements. I believe the current plan of expanding Penn station under MSG is a better use of funds over moving and rebuilding MSG, which would probably require significant public funds. I believe a project like extending the N train to LaGuardia would be much more beneficial to the city than moving MSG, just so Penn Station can have a more dramatic train hall.

While we are all tossing in our favorites, I like the ASTM concept most
