Something I hadn't tgought about but if most people have been members for 15-20 years and were in their 20s at that time they are now mostly in the suburban dream age category. Either they've changed or their wives squashed the hope out of them and they are now happy with the horrible built form that makes up our suburbs.

Peavey Mart which only last week announced 22 stores closing in Eastern Canada, is now apparently closing all their Canadian stores, according to retail-insider. No time line has been given as of yet, but in a public statement from the Peace River store manager, his best guess was 3-6 months.

I drove past the one in Brantford last night and saw the Store Closing sign, so I googled it and found the news of 22 closings, but not about all of them.

I think they messed up by ditching the TSC brand. Everyone knew what that was. To this day I still hear people still say "Peavey mart - you know, the old TSC - had X on sale" kind of thing.

Kind of disappointed, we just moved to a rural property and I was looking forward to having one close by for buying farm stuff.

sad to see another Canadian retailer bite the dust. I live very close to a Peavey Mart (I could never understand the rebranding from TSC)--one of the ones that had been slated to close in April--and while I didn't shop there very often, it is always good to have some local competition.

Yeah, I think it was a mistake for them to rebrand under their western Canada parent's name when they took over TSC. I don't think they would have had much trouble operating under their respective well-known name in either part of the country. Most people in Ontario probably thought it was just another American takeover. Although many thought TSC was an American company already, even though they had no relationship with Tractor Supply in the US since the 60's, and even then, it was still Canadian ownership.

Until quite recently, I had assumed that TSC had been bought out by an American company. I did not like the name "Peavey"...too peevish.

Yep, not having been aware that the brand existed in the West, I remember being very confused at the name. In Ontario we went from a known brand to some weird cross of Wal-Mart and being peeved at something, perhaps the '80s logo. Should have rebranded about forty years ago...

The company is based in Red Deer AB. They sure didn't know how to market themselves because I've seen their stores when travelling but never had an interest in going inside one. My wife thought the name was weird. They have locations in Temiskaming Shores, Sudbury and the Sault in Northeastern ON and I don't know anybody who has been to one.

You'd think that Alberta with it's population and wealth would have some successful retail companies with locations across Canada but that doesn't seem to be the case. One company that may be in trouble from my observations is M&M Food Market (formerly meat shops). It was founded in Kitchener ON and was known for having good prices. The company is now owned by Parkland which owns gas stations and is based in Calgary AB. M&M's prices are crazy expensive and way more than the grocery store. Barely anybody shops there anymore. The franchisees must be super pissed at what has happened. And the Esso / On the Run in my neighbourhood sells a number of M&M products at even higher prices. So high that a crappy frozen individual meal is $12-15 and you can drive down the road to A&W and pay less for a combo with more food and a drink.

Last time I was in a Peavey mart was probably 15 years ago in Saskatoon. I remember it being this weird hardware store that also included all those parts you would buy if you were a farmer, e.g. attachments for your tractor or contraptions to feed your chickens. I think the only thing I ever purchased in their was an extension cord.

My memory of Bargain Shop! goes back 20 years as the place in small town Ontario that are not big enough to a Walmart. Did they ever make their way into the city? In Western Canada, the equivalent would be Field's Department stores. I guess now that market will be dominated by Giant Tiger.

Perhaps I am missing something, I don't see how Peavey mart and the Bargain Shop! are remotely the same. Perhaps they both sell flannel plaid shirts. Other than that do they have anything else in common?

I should say, as an urban city dweller, i actually like warm flannel plaid shirts, they are just hard to find in the city. One has to venture out to small town Canada to find them.

That sucks, I liked peavy mart. Neat store with all kinds of crap. I went there mostly for farm and gardening stuff. I’ll miss the place.

Yeah it's a shame.
In my hometown the early 1990s era Canadian Tire store moved to a new, much larger store.
It left that store vacant for many, many months until TSC took it over. Then TSC became Peavey Mart. Now this will be a vacancy that's tough to fill. Sad to see.

I've don't think I've ever visited a TSC/Peavey Mart. I drove by their location in Kemptville a number of times though, and it kinda gave me the vibes of a Home Hardware, but with farming stuff that you can hardly find anywhere else. I wonder who's going to fill the gap now for this sort of specialized equipment.

I loved the Peavey mart close to me. They closed last summer. It was nice to go somewhere where I could actually find staff if needed. and the prices were good.

If Trump starts the trade war, you guys should seriously stop shopping at Walmart and helping the Bentonville, Arkansas Walton family get richer. Costco too, unfortunately.

Between Giant Tiger, Canadian Tire, Canadian owned grocery and drug stores you can find almost everything that a Walmart sells.

Whoa, I don't remeber that one, but I just had an old TSC jingle pop into my head!

We've been shopping relatively locally for a while. Small markets have great prices, and we buy direct from some farms where possible. A large freezer helps. I'm sure we'll be hit with price increases since demand from these types of products are in somewhat limited supply.

If we shop at a grocery store it's often Whole Foods, and often for fresh fruit and veggies where you can see the origin anyway. You can still shop at grocery stores and make sure you are buying Canadian grown produce, or packaged food (the source of ingredients can get murky though).

Search out farmers markets, find local CSAs.
