Yup.

As of Dec. 2 [2002], bars, restaurant and pubs will be allowed by the province to stay open until 4 a.m., though municipalities will have the final word on when bars will close.

A by-law amendment passed by Council on November 19, 2009, establishes the hours of liquor service in restaurants as:

1am closing time Sunday to Thursday
2am closing time Friday and Saturday
A half-hour tolerance period, after which drinks must be removed from tables, applies.
This is draconian overreach from city councils past. Although I don't think it's much different in other municipalities in BC.

I just find it weird. Sure I see why selling booze after last call is a problem but getting in trouble because your patrons aren't finishing their glass off in time seems unfair.

Seems like they wanted it to be an hour when they first implemented the policy in 1998.

Quote:
The extension of the closing tolerance period is presently used in two other communities in British Columbia. Since the extended closing tolerance period has been used in these communities there has been little or no impact on policing resources. In fact there may actually have been a reduction in the number of calls for police service related to these liquor license establishments.

Staff have participated in an extensive public dialogue as part of the Granville Street liquor licensing report (Theatre Row Entertainment District and Downtown Granville South). Part of this discussion involved impacts of permitting cabarets to remain open to 3:00 a.m., thereby giving the operators one hour to disperse customers instead of the existing 30 minutes. Liquor service would still cease at 2:00 a.m. General support was received for this proposal by the residents. Residents viewed the proposal as an opportunity to reduce the frequency of late night disturbances provided there was a mechanism to remove this privilege if disturbances increase or other problems arise with particular operators.
I think the tolerance period is supposed to be the time when people are cleared of the premises and not extra time to finish a drink.

There's a little more to the story, apparently the booze was actually rung in after hours too. You can call the rules petty but they were broken in this case ISTM.

Not defending the policy, but in this situation it is probably intended to make sure somebody doesn't put in a huge order for drinks just before the serving deadline.

Chick-fil-A’s growth in Canada continues with new expansion plans for British Columbia

Chick-fil-A plans to expand its Canadian footprint to British Columbia with five to seven new restaurants expected to open in the province by 2030.

The brand in a news release said its growth in British Columbia follows its successful expansion into the province of Alberta in 2024, where three new restaurants opened in Calgary and Edmonton last year.

The company said it plans to open its first restaurant in British Columbia by late 2027 or early 2028.

While technically they sold past the time indicated in the bylaw, my experience is that bartenders will generally take the orders of any patrons that were in line for a drink before the deadline. So when they get their receipt it will show it’s “too late”.

They will cut the line off but continue to fulfill the orders of people in line (which tends to go a few minutes past) because it’s a lot easier on staff to say it’s too late to get in line than to have potentially drunk patrons complaining that the bartenders were too slow and they’re only not getting their drink because the bartender was — at their job and not fast enough.

Essentially they are finding a happy medium that respects the law but diminishes the chances of an altercation.

Anyways it just seems like law enforcement has their focus in the wrong places. Tackle the big issues first then we can get to this “problem”.

Kinda reaffirms the feeling that the laws are strictly enforced for regular people, but not for the homeless population who are doing illegal things in public, often right outside of the clubs and bars.

It'll probably be somewhere deep in the sticks or somewhere like Mission or Harrison Hot Springs.

These franchises seem to love to test the waters way waaay outside the large cities before opening up spots closer to the urban areas.

It would be great if they actually opened their first somewhere like Robson st., Dunsmuir, or Main St. or even a Lonsdale ave.

I don't think I've ever seen a Chick-fil-A in a downtown area in a US city, they are usually located in the burbs.

LOL Harrison Hot Springs .... opening a restaurant with 120 employees out there .... to service who?

the first location will be at a Major Mall (Metrotown or Guildford) OR a standalone with drive thru in Langley/Abby. I will guarantee this.

first location in Alberta for example was at WEM.

Carls JR
Mary Browns

are 2 I can think of off the top of my head...
