The Abercrombie of those days and the Abercrombie that used b&w teen porn to sell cargo shorts were really two totally seperate companies. I should read the wiki article before the new regime shuts it down and starts burning libraries.

Big dept stores are cold as ice. The closing of Macy's Center City is particularly hard because that building has existed as a dept store long before Macy's took over. It opened in 1876 (correction: the building that is there now is from 1911) and has been a cultural staple of the region since.

Since the 1950s, the Christmas Light show has been a central part of the holiday's for the city. I'm glad I went this Christmas and will be genuinely sad if the show never plays again.

OK. Funny because the early 2000s was right around the time I started going to malls less and less, but I still don't remember the name...

I also looked up Hot Topic, because I do remember that store from my younger years. That store originated out of southern California (Montclair, CA, in the Inland Empire).

Did anyone shop at Vans stores? I did. I even got some jackets there when I was in my 20s.

I hated walking by an A&F store, it always smelled like really strong cologne, which is always a turnoff for me.

Ok so North Face is no longer a thing, right? I felt like for a few years some years ago, a lot of people were wearing things that said "North Face" on it, and then nobody wears it anymore. I never got into North Face, I associated then with a specific demographic, particularly Karens. And I don't like huge logos on my clothing.

There was a time in the 2000s/early 2010s when you couldn't go outside and not see someone wearing the North Face fleece jacket.

My main heavy-duty winter parka for like the past 15 years is one of those ultra-warm dual-layered (shell + liner) North Face ones. It replaced a very similar North Face parka that I got in the early 90s as a teenager, that had finally reached the end of its life.

So I still wear North Face.

Mighty useful for our recent artic blast with -25 wind chills.

I sure as shit ain't shelling out another $200+ for a new winter parka just because the brand has fallen out of fashion. It's an extremely well made coat that's still in great shape (mostly cuz I only break it out on the coldest of winter days), and it's solid black, which always works, regardless of decade, or century, or millennium.

When the bottom truly falls out, like earlier this week, all you care about is how warm the parka will keep you. Fashion becomes 8 trillion percent irrelevant.

I'm certainly not a Karren and I have had North Face winter coats for a while now. Last year I replaced the North Face coat I had ripped accidently with a Columbia coat. Big mistake. Going back to North Face in the future.

Haha I don't like labels on my clothes either.

That's it right there.

To many people in warm winter climates, North Face is just another brand; little more than a mere fashion choice.

But for those of us who actually require high performance winter outerwear from time to time, we know that they make the good shit.

I'm generally a cheap-as-fuck miserly bastard in most aspects of life, but as a life long Chicagoan, a good winter parka is one thing I will not cheap out on. I give exactly zero shits about the logo on it. It just has to perform.

North Face performs.

i think TNF has always had its place as actual outerwear but i think in the 90s/00s it became popular as casual streetwear as well. like those big puffy jackets. then as time went on it kinda got replaced with patagonia for casual outerwear. i think TNF is starting to make a comeback though as gen Z and alpha start making older fashion trends popular again (baggy pants, cargo pants, etc) although i’m not sure how this is currently translating to sales and traffic volume at brick and mortar TNFs.

North Face is still very much a thing for "real winter clothing" as others have put it. But yeah, it's fallen out of fashion beyond that.

I don't care for big brands on my clothing either, but you can rip my NF skiing gear from my cold, dead hands (which will never happen because I'll have NF gloves on).

I think the only North Face item I've ever owned are a pair of gloves, which are still great. Columbia has always been my preferred brand of the two, though. I have a Columbia ski coat that is close to 20 years old but looks like I've only had it a couple of years. I've had the coat nearly half my life lol.
