Ashley Wolf, A Salt Lake City Park Ranger, created an AI generated image and submitted it as an original piece and the mayor’s office either thought it was a real original painting or they just didn’t give a shit it’s fake.

OR Ashley might have posted the image online, and the mayor's office came across it, sharing it while crediting her as the artist.

Nah, look at the wawnky, nonsensical windows. If you ask an image generator for an image of SLC during sunset in Thomas Kinkade style it’ll look just like this.

There is an illustrator named Ashley Wolf, but her style is nothing like this and she’s not a park ranger.

LOL. I know artist are a wide ranging breed, but why would anyone paint something like a city downtown with some buildings that exist in reality (temple), but not everything else? the smaller buildings can be generic, but the main buildings? Why just make shit up? lol.

Although the postcard is not an accurate depiction of DT, I actually like the idea of having some tapered tops on buildings for SLC. Maybe something like what is in Atlanta with the Atlanta Center, Bank of America Tower or the Triust Plaza.

So, if I understand correctly, we are loosing a historic building because the prospective tenants wouldn't be able to provide enough parking to meet city requirements, for an establishment where people would be drinking, in a zone that is designed for transit, two blocks from an LRT station.

I walked past Entry Note yesterday, (1 block east of this proposal) it looks to be about done. I was impressed with the street engagement. If the retail spaces get leased it will be good for the neighborhood. 9th Note looks to be about the same.

Now we just need to get that Ecolodge property redeveloped.

Hot take:

Central business districts should have NO parking minimums. Let the free market (private garages, etc.) price what it's worth to store a car downtown.

Downtown land is precious and we need every inch of it either to make money or to serve a public purpose (parks, libraries, etc.). Vehicle storage serves neither. Requiring it is local government overreach. Even residential should be left to the bank's market analysis of customer demand, not the whims of outdated city code. The city should help steer the developer to make flat garages that can later be converted into occupyable space — not mandating a specific number of spots.

Sure, once you get to car-dependent suburbs, minimums make sense. But not downtown. And certainly not at the site you mention.

I’m glad to see something happening here. This has kind of become the worst section of North Temple since Gateway Inn was demolished. At this point there is either construction or or plans for almost all of the huge problem areas along north temple.

Here are the few remaining areas that nothing has been announced for.

- The north side of North Temple Between 800 & 900 west. With the 9th Note announcement, this will now become the most problematic section of North temple. I would like to see Rancho Market and all the one level retail to the south and east of it demolished. I do think with all the new residential that a grocery store may be necessary. I think something similar to the down town harmons or Lees with residential above it would be good.

- There are still a few of the old motels that need to be removed. The Econo Lodge at 751 W, All Star Travel at 754 W, and Park Inn at 1990 W. These could all be replaced with residential.

- The intersection of North Temple & Redwood Road definitely needs some help. The south-east corner was supposed to get a Starbucks… I’m not sure if that still happening, but all of that area is going to be redeveloped with the power district plan. The south-west area definitely needs some redevelopment. I would love to see the loves truck stop, and all that stuff go. The north-east area also needs some redevelopment as the 7-11 looks like trash. The north-west area is probably OK.

- Then there is the huge RV/Trailer park. I’m not sure what’s gonna happen there. But I do know that with everything else happening along north Temple that the property value is going to go way up…. I don’t see that staying there for very long. I know Utah is probably not ready for the NFL yet… but I’m just saying. That would probably be a great spot for a future NFL stadium.. especially with the MLB stadium being right across the way. I think that either the Smith or Miller group, would be wise to snag up this trailer park and just continue to operate it until we are ready.

- The other area of North Temple, that I am really sad that the city even let happen is the expansion of Parking Spot west of I 215… that was so shortsighted. That area of North Temple should be dedicated to airport hotels! It would’ve been perfect. They could’ve even added a Trax station there and extended the free fair zone from downtown to the airport. I think the hotels that are currently operating west of the airport would be much better off on that strip of North Temple. With an added Trax station, people could easily get back-and-forth between there and the airport… and also have quick access to downtown… the third-party airport parking could’ve been put down 2200 W. just a little ways.

Even a small park with trees would be preferrable to what is there now.

I think those corner lots, specifically the ones which are cut out of a single apartment like that as they seem increasingly common around the city, would make such good spots for small or medium towers to accent the low-rise apartment and highlight the significance of the corners. I am thinking of the 7th E/4th S project that will be similar but it applies to here and others. Even something modest like 12ish stories (like that apartment on 4th S next to street tacos) would be cool for spots like that

Agreed. Hopefully the city can provide incentives of mixed-use smaller towers.
