AIR CANADA NS25 A220 US NETWORK ADDITIONS

Air Canada in Northern summer 2025 season plans to expand Airbus A220-300 service to the US, although selected routes only see mainline A220 scheduled for short term period, as of 05JAN25.

None of these are additions though but rather equipment changes. Aeroroutes didn’t word that one very well. The former two are a slight capacity decrease, while the latter two are a one seat per departure capacity increase.

Wonder what the *new* International destination WestJet plans to start up from Calgary YYC for (S25) is?

Given the announcement location is a Mexican restaurant, I'd put good money on it being YYC-MEX. International and within 737 range as the 789 fleet is MAXed (pun intended) out. Another sun route wouldn't warrant a press conference, nor would it happen for the summer schedule.

Isn’t the Mexican government limiting expansion at MEX? So they’d had to use NLU, unless they managed to get slots from someone else. They also previously served YYC-MEX too.

It’s odd to me that MEX-YYC hasn’t worked with any airline. There is a healthy Latin America population in Calgary/Alberta/prairies. You think there would be some code sharing opportunities with Westjet & AeroMexico on both ends. Especially since AM is SkyTeam. Would be many one stop connections to South America.

Yes a few years ago when WS WestJet started Calgary YYC - Mexico City MEX flight✈️route, WS also added Vancouver YVR- MEX too & with similar frequencies as YYC - MEX✅. Both routes eventually got cut by WS.

I found that odd, as YVR - MEX already had up to 2/3 dailys on AC Air Canada & AM AeroMexico flying it✅.

WS adding YVR - MEX at the same time as YYC - MEX wasn’t a good plan✅.

CP used to run a DC-8 weekly (example Flghts 421/422 in 1968). And you could stay abord for Lima or Santiago. In 1969 the Fri version of 422 extended down to Buenos Aires.

Population of Calgary at the time was about 360,000 per Mr. Google

Airfares (and therefore yields) were also extremely high in the 60s and 70s compared to today. What worked back then with those airfares isn’t a good metric to determine if something can work now.

This being said, there is no reason why a well timed YYC-MEX can’t work for WS. Timing is key. If it’s NLU, then you’re starting on the back foot already, so it has to be MEX and decent slot times. Let’s see.

There's absolutely no way NLU will work IMO. I think it has to be MEX

If it is YYC-MEX (as seems the most logical guess for the reasons mentioned), it is certainly not worthy of a big special event/pre-announcement teaser. Having been tried with 3 airlines before including WS themselves, it isn't momentous lol. But WS loves building drama and fanfare, their pressers are always over the top and boisterous even when the news is minor. Other airlines never do that lol. Not that there's nothing wrong with it, I appreciate news releases, it's just they take it over the top with teasers and then a throw in a big in person event off site. It's moves like this that remind me of the early Westjet behaviour, all country bumpkin, eager and earnest

Indeed there must be more to it than simply another Mexican destination announcement. Did Merida or Loreto receive such fanfare when announced? Nope! And if it is indeed Mexico City, which was tried in the past, this announcement better lead to better performance than the last time it was attempted or all this hoopla will have been for naught.

It’s only the one new route as far as I can see and seems timed for connections. Won’t say much more until it’s formally announced tomorrow.

Also well WS updated its schedule in the GDS they did not file it in the OAG, possibly to avoid schedule leaks.
