The city will be reconstructing Oxford Street between Highbury and Fanshawe College starting next year as part of the final phase of the East London Link BRT.

The road will be widened to maintain the four existing lanes of traffic, plus two new centre-running bus lanes, left turn lanes, sidewalks and cycling paths on both sides.

A public session was recently held online and they provided renderings of this stretch of road.

Looks like new there will be three new traffic signals installed (in addition to the ones already there); one at JP2 high school / future road to Old Oaks subdivision, one at the western end of Fanshawe College, and a pedestrian signal between First St and Second St.

And just as a reminder, the above project, along with the widening of the Highbury bridge north of Dundas will be the only totally new BRT projects that will start next year.

All the other main BRT projects next year are just a continuation of the two projects that started this year (widening of Wellington from Exeter Rd to Wilkins St, and the widening of the Wellington bridge over the Thames River).

I'm happy to see the changes at the western end of Fanshawe (London Lane), where right now it is a right in right out from/to the westbound lanes. The receiving area for the college is at that end and right now if I want to go back east or south on First, I have to drive across the front of the college, through the busy pedestrian traffic and bus bays to access the First St exit. Which with a truck, I end up blocking 2 or sometimes all 3 lanes trying to get out of there, backing everyone else up until I can go.

Hopefully we see another high rise rezoning proposal for the Ayerswood Ave block on the south side that the city rejected a couple of years ago due to lack of sewer capacity and resistance from the college. Old Oaks could start site prep next year for the new Legacy Village neighbourhood that will see 32s high rise towers in the future. Density Density Density is the name of the Game especially along a BRT line.

They have now got the base coat of paving on the northbound side of Wellington between Bradley and Southdale. Also appear to have boarded up some more homes on the stretch of Wellington at the curve north of Baseline. Likely ahead of getting demolition permit paperwork completed.

10 of 45 properties still remain outstanding and need to progress to expropriation on the Wellington leg of the BRT project.

"Multiple properties have been identified for full buyout to accommodate the project design and legal possession is required prior to advancing utility work and awarding the construction contract.
Ten (10) full buyout properties remain outstanding of the forty-five (45) total properties.
Realty Services will continue to negotiate with the outstanding property owners in parallel with the expropriation process."

Large heavy lift mobile crane now setup in order to install the heavy I-beams for the new section of the Wellington Rd bridge over the Thames. Apparently these beams will be delivered very soon.

LoL, yep, the first set were being delivered as you wrote that and the rest are coming in on Friday. Police escort and intersection closures coming down Richmond to Sunningdale, to Wonderland, to Horton to Wellington.

I saw these at Richmond and Fanshawe Park Rd yesterday and couldn't figure out what they would be for! This explains it!

Looks like they completed the install of the new I-beams on the south side of the river. The heavy lift mobile crane is now on the north side. Might be prepping to install those I-beams next?

They have started installing one of the new bus shelters on Wellington in front of the TD tower. Not sure how many more of these are planned for the downtown loop.

Seeing Brampton just got given $2 billion for a downtown tunnel and Hamilton is getting it's LRT free of charge, has London approached Queen's Park for more money for BRT in proportion to it's population? This would be at least a $1 billion for BRT/transit improvements or is City Hall just waiting for another city to take the money? With a provincial election underway and a federal one soon, there will never be a better time for getting money from senior levels of gov't.

Maybe the lack of funding from the Province can be used as a cop out by city politicians (who never dared to dream big) for providing the most bare-bones of a rapid transit system?

I recall living in Vancouver back in the mid 90s, when there were still a lot of local politicians that had a small city mindset. Every aspect of the city's infrastructure was underwhelming.

All of London's ridings are leaning PC right now so a complete orange to blue sweep may mean Douggie could reward London with something. RT expansion? Ring road? Who knows.

Construction will start on the Oxford phase of the East London Link next week. You can find the renderings in my previous post here from November. Preparatory work has already started.
