Local media is starting to report on the R44/46/62/68 retirements/replacements/procurements in the 2025-2029 capital plan like its breaking news even though weve known this timeline for years.

I'm all for the B Division retirements but I'm still adament the R62/62A could have their lives extended for another 15 years easy with an overhaul/modernization/CBTC retrofit ( which IS possible). They're such good cars, it seems like a collosal waste to scrap them when they just need a 2/3 life rebuild. NYCT could probably accomplish this for a 1/3 of the cost of new. I do wish there was more scrutiny on rolling stock replacement including alt analysis and cost/benefit of overhauling versus handing Kawasaki or Alstom billion+ dollar contracts.

I'm sure it'll happen within the next few millennia if civilization lasts that long, but it seems much more practical (less expensive) to just develop aerospace technology that has radically higher speeds than current. There have already been supersonic airliners in revenue service and I'm sure it would be technologically feasible to build a much faster version, maybe using a ram-jet or something operating in ultra high altitude. You could probably develop the whole program for under a trillion.

Every year and a half to three years the street that the congestion charge gets applied to should go north by 10 blocks.

Oh my God, it might actually go live on Sunday

NYC Congestion Pricing Cleared by Judge for Sunday Launch
Quote:
New York’s controversial plan to charge drivers entering Manhattan’s central business district was cleared by a federal judge to take effect on Sunday, in a blow to efforts by neighboring New Jersey to kill the congestion toll.

Judge Leo Gordon on Friday rejected New Jersey’s request for a pause while the Federal Highway Administration responds to the judge’s order for more information on the plan’s potential impact on traffic patterns and pollution in the Garden State.

The ruling, issued after an extended hearing in Newark, caps a high-stakes showdown between the two states, with billions of dollars in toll revenue on the line for modernizing New York’s more than century-old transit system. It comes after a detailed decision Monday in which Gordon dismissed most of New Jersey’s concerns but ordered the US to provide the extra information by Jan. 17 and set deadlines for further court filings into February.

Yeah I've been seeing online that the signs are going up. Barring some really weird last instant judicial intervention looks like it goes hot tomorrow.

Hallelujah. Better transit, improved air quality, fewer accidents and deaths, less traffic and huge economic benefits.

And a huge FU to all the car-addicted wackos who fought this. My kid deserves to breathe cleaner air.

If people want to enter the congestion zone and are cheapskates, and don't meet the lower income discounts, you can always enter overnight. It's just $2.25, less than a subway fare.

Most businesses will benefit from this. Say a plumber, who enters Manhattan daily and does say 3-4 jobs. A $9 toll for less congestion will save him more than sitting in traffic. And his customers, already being charged hundreds for him just showing up, can eat the proportional $2 or whatever.
