My friend's grandmother graduated from Bishop Conaty in the early 1940s.

Yeah, it would make a good Professor Xavier's school too. If they did use the house as a setting for a movie they would probably use the house for establishing shots and film estate scenes elsewhere.

Grand Victorian in Detroit's Corktown, once home of a Tigers owner, for sale for almost $2 million

At first glance the price tag seems steep, but the sale includes this adjacent duplex: https://maps.app.goo.gl/E6YhbzvKe6iVThQe7

According to Zillow, the Victorian house was built in 1880. Zillow doesn't have info on the duplex, but an educated guess it that it was likely built in between 1890 and 1910.

Laurene Powell-Jobs just bought a $70M house on Billionaire's Row in SF-that's record for SF. She will be next door to Larry Ellison.

From The Spaces:

In South Pasadena, a renovated carriage house asks for $3.19m

This South Pasadena compound originally served as the carriage house for lumber merchant W E Cooper’s lavish La Willinda estate. It was designed by architect Louis du Puget Millar in 1914 and has recently undergone a modern reinvention with a striking glass-walled addition.

Millar was an Irish architect who emigrated to the United States around 1906, eventually setting up his own practice in Pasadena. He quickly became a prominent and prolific designer, particularly along the Arroyo, where many of his houses were erected up to the interwar period. Millar’s aesthetic was heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and British architectural sensibility, which can be seen in the original part of the home.

The current owners have eschewed pastiche while expanding the dwelling, choosing to draw a ‘distinct line between the 1914 building and recent addition,’ says listing agent Nate Cole of Modern California House, who is marketing the property for $3.188m. The glass addition houses a new gourmet kitchen with walnut cabinetry, along with the living and dining rooms, while the original prewar structure has also been renovated.

One of the finest houses in the city of Buffalo is for sale, err "sale pending"

50 Tudor Place
c. 1927, "built with the finest materials and methods available at the time"
~8,700 square feet. 6 bedrooms, 5.5 baths
w/3 bed, 1 bath carriage house apt above garage.
Asking a hefty for Western NY standards:
$4.25 Million. Last sold in 2012 for a paltry $1.14 Million.

In Buffalo's favored spine between Elmwood and Delaware Avenues, north of downtown. Older Buffalonians know this area as the "Delaware District" as Delaware Avenue once had the prestige of "Millionaire's Row" from around the turn of the 20th century until the 1929 stock market crash.

Per WGRZ Buffalo NBC affiliate
Quote:
The mansion was originally built in 1927 for Orin Foster, a philanthropist and co-founder of Foster-Milburn Co., an early manufacturer of medicines. The 8,695-square-foot structure was designed by Paul F. Mann, who has worked on other well-known structures in the Buffalo area, such as the Harlow C. Curtiss Building
https://maps.app.goo.gl/MG6zQtTSCxHPuWk76

AFAIK, the highest selling price in city of Buffalo was around $3M. In Western NY overall it was a new build ~7,000 sq ft McMansion in the suburb of Clarence for over $6.5M during summer of 2022.

Iconic modernist home hits market

https://roughdraftatlanta.com/2024/11/15...hebys-international-realty-entelechy-ii/

Quote:
Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty and DeLoach Sotheby’s International Realty in Georgia, will exclusively launch Entelechy II, an architectural masterpiece designed by renowned American architect and real estate developer John Portman.

The extraordinary beachfront estate built on Sea Island, GA in 1986 served as Portman’s personal home for 31 years and showcases his modernist design and visionary approach. Captivating architectural enthusiasts since its celebrated feature in Architectural Digest in 1987, the home is now being offered for sale publicly for the first time for $40 million.

“Entelechy II is a triumph of architectural vision – a modernist masterpiece that served as the personal retreat of the legendary John Portman and his family,” said Philip White, president and CEO, of Sotheby’s International Realty. “Portman built this extraordinary 12,500-square-foot property in an exceptional coastal location, where he could fully bring his innovative design approach to life. The residence embodies his iconic work throughout Georgia and the world, and it is a true privilege for our brand to represent such an extraordinary estate.”

According to Paul Goldberger, famed American author and architectural critic, “Portman was one of the few architects in modern times who seemed to take as much delight in playfulness as in geometric form and structural rigor.” The term “entelechy” refers to the realization of one’s potential and with Entelechy II, Portman incorporates the design philosophy from his previous works and his gift for making everyday spaces feel like an experience.

This is really fascinating, it looks like a convention center Colorado and I would love to like decorate a house like that with like eclectic pieces from different periods.

If you're in the market for a Painted Lady and you don't have the ~$3.6 million asking price for one in San Francisco (https://www.realtor.com/news/unique-homes/san-francisco-pink-painted-lady-for-sale/), perhaps a St. Louis version will be to your liking! While not as famous, one of the four similarly Victorian Painted Ladies of Lafayette Square can be yours for $875K; 75% less than its counterparts in San Francisco. Fully rehabbed and with solar panels.

St. Louis probably has the most underrated housing stock in the country. . .

^ i sure wish more people appreciated it—locals in particular. we continue to lose irreplaceable historic fabric on a daily basis. this is another victim of the shriveled 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 🞵🞵 🞵🞵🞵🞵 Paul McKee, who was given tens of millions of $ in tax breaks by the city and state to redevelop a large swath of the North Side. instead he's just been letting everything rot, razing it all, and building nothing for over 2 decades:

sometimes it's hopelessly depressing.

Here is a nice overview of 19th & 20th century single-family home styles in Cincinnati:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikPXRWEjvFI

This lady is probably from Toledo or Cleveland (her accent is pretty obnoxious) but they put a ton of work into editing all of the drone footage of the thousands of flamboyant old homes that still stand in the city.

An interesting footnote is the Switzerland-themed houses from the late 1800s. They are absurdly out-of-place today and must have been just as ridiculous when they were built. There are urban legends that they were brought over piece-by-piece from Switzerland but I don't believe those stories.

Almost bought this but someone else beat me to it:

https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhom...-Perry-Dr_Marshall_TX_75670_M78552-78760

A little house dating back to the Texas Republic era

(Decent ROI as an Airbnb nowadays.)

BTW, totally affordable for a regular person to buy and live in… Still plenty of affordable real estate in the U.S.

Those houses are extremely narrow, the stairs are so steep they look like a death trap and it's 3 floors.

It's cute if you like the aesthetic but the housing stock is hardly that great for modern living for most people.

Correct.

At the macro-level, there is no housing affordability crisis in the US (as evidenced by the thousands of homes across the rustbelt crumbling and rotting away right now.

At worst, what you can say is that there is a "housing affordability crisis for homes that I would be interested in, in locations I would deem acceptable".

At the local level, yes there are very real pressures in certain markets, but let's not pretend that a regular old house in some forgotten corner of America like Decatur, IL is now completely out of reach for a regular old middle class family. It's not.

Yes and no. It's "affordable" because it's in Marshall, has only one bedroom and probably needs a lot of updating.

Not sure what you think is satirical about it. That home also just got a 25K price cut so clearly they're having trouble selling.
