So for years I had this spot picked out north of Miesville, MN where the terrain lines up just right that it was maybe possible to see the Minneapolis skyline in the right conditions. For years I had it sitting there, until today I went finally went out there to see for myself and holy cow, there it was in plain sight—Minneapolis from 33 miles away!

Now I don't want to speak in absolutes, because for all I know I could be totally wrong on this—but given that I've spent 5 years scouring the internet for Minneapolis skyline pictures and haven't found anything from further than 30 miles, I'm calling this the furthest view of Minneapolis ever captured from ground level. However, I would be happy to be proven wrong

For anyone located in the Twin Cities area, this picture was taken at coordinates (44.615194, -92.810579), on 230th St a mile north of Miesville in Dakota County.

Nice picture, Epicabilities! Minneapolis seems like a hard one to try and get because much of southern Minnesota is seemingly flat.

We got about two inches of snow on Friday night and Saturday morning. This looks like it could be Vermont except for the skyline of Manhattan in the background, which is about 12 - 14 miles away.

Approaching Austin from the north on Interstate 35 (December 2024)

Thanks! It's definitely a challenge to find spots, but it's fun because it forces me to get creative. For this shot I had to use https://www.heywhatsthat.com/ to make a viewshed and examine satellite data from Google Maps to find clear spots where trees wouldn't obstruct my view. There are well-known high spots like Buck Hill in Burnsville, but for the most part I've had to rely on these gently-sloping hills to find spots.

buildings in the foreground are evanston hospital, which is ~13 miles north of the loop.

no zoom lens distortion here, this is very "naked eye".

Minneapolis and St. Paul (well, the tippy tops of them) from Valley Creek Rd over I-494 in Woodbury, at 15 miles and 6 miles away, respectively. Picture taken back in July 2021.

Nashville from what I'm going to estimate is from roughly 10-12 miles to the north. Unfortunately a traffic helicopter shot, so not the greatest quality, but still an excellent representation of both the manmade and natural skyline.

Some people already do this, which is appreciated, but I think we should try to make a distinction between pictures with feet on solid ground and pictures from in the air. For anyone wishing to go to the spot and get the picture themselves, if it's from the air, it's kind of a crapshoot to reproduce, whereas from solid ground is much more replicable.

This page has especially been good at mentioning if it's from the air or from some place on solid ground. The Nashville picture is a good example, because my first thought was to try and go to whatever mountaintop that was from if I'm ever down there some time, but BnaBreaker was wise enough to let us know that it was from the air.
