Peguis First Nation and one of its economic development companies are suing a contractor who never built a proposed motel, casino and gas bar, as well as a mechanic who is accused of failing to deliver pricey Zamboni batteries, according to court documents.

According to a statement of claim filed in Manitoba's Court of King's Bench at the end of September in connection with the motel project, Waasa Indigenous Services has not returned or provided an accounting for $1.4 million it received from Peguis Development Corporation in the spring of 2019.

In a separate statement of claim, the First Nation alleges RT Knight Industries has not reimbursed the $30,000 Peguis paid in 2021 for Zamboni batteries it never received.

The lawsuits are the latest attempt under current Peguis Chief Stan Bird to recoup funds spent during past administrations. Peguis First Nation is struggling financially, due in part to perennial flooding and the financial aftermath of high-interest loans.

Full disclosure: I actually spent a bit of time searching around for obits/death notices of lawyers around my age (I think he and I were close in age). But I didn't find anything.

Hope he is ok, but he didn't seem the type to just up and leave without some sort of message.

It's funny, this made me think of when I joined. Esquire was the first forumer that I actually interacted with here. There was a group of us that all started around the same time and are still here today.

This is next year's equalization payments. Roughly $4.6 billion to MB. For perspective, Manitoba's annual budget is about $24 billion. Nearly 20% of gov revenue is from equalization payments. Which can get yanked at any time. And pressure is mounting to do exactly that.

And this doesn't even include the $2 billion deficit. Between the deficit and equalization, Almost 1/3 of MB's spending is unsustainable. This province is a financial ticking time bomb.

The province--and the people of this province--need to get off the teet, pull their heads out of their asses, and build a self-sustaining and thriving economy.

I agree having to receive equalization is a bad thing, and that they make a worryingly large fraction of the budget, but the payments are not "at risk" of being "yanked at any time". They're required by the constitution.
