There's a BIG difference between north of the U of W and south of the U of W. You're right that's it's only about one block, but man is that one block a huge dividing line.

When I tell people I love on Langside St, they sometimes shudder. That is until I tell them I live South of Broadway and then they ask me what it's like living in Wolseley lol.

Similar sort of vibe in this case.

haha I love the vibe west broadway. Would consider living there but will be hard to find what I'm looking for (accessible, open, single level home).

We bought a 1 and 3/4 story for our first home, absolutely love it. The convenience is wicked.

Yeah, that sort of house doesn't really exist in Wolseley or West Broadway.

It's all stairs all the time at my place (2.5 storey)

My mom grew up on Evanson in a big 2.5 storey and it was awesome. Basically I need 4 bedrooms single level home. Nearly impossible to find. Thus why I haven't moved yet. 2 kids in one bedroom in our bungalow.

Likely need to build somewhere and that sucks. Hoping for a lot nearish downtown, or maybe build an addition to an existing 3 bedroom if we can find one big enough.

There's new 2 storey houses with the main floor bedroom. But its mostly oriented to a guest bedroom right at the front door. Don't want that for my kid to be all by themselves down there.

No shortage of large bungalows in River Heights, bomberjet! Come to God's Country! LOL Just don't mind the dancing foundation, is all.

Hey, I have one of those! I left my condo in the east exchange and bought one on Cambridge. Are the dancing foundations especially prominent in RH or is it a Winnipeg thing. Thankfully mine sits pretty level and the basement is dry, but I've noticed plenty of lopsided doozy's around.

^ Dancing foundations are generally a Winnipeg wide phenomena.

However River Heights is particularly bad - partially due to the soils, the large number of homes built from the 1930s to 1950s (the worst vintage of housing construction in general), and people with enough money to attempt to tackle the problem.

Anecdotally, from my experience the north side of the Assiniboine has more stable soils.

Great...

Two more years of study for a plan that does practically the same thing.

We really have an inability to plan in this province.

Well when you look at what the Winnipeg Metropolitan Area was made up of municipality wise, you basically had:
- A single, large urban center (Winnipeg) with all the urban benefits and costs you'd expect in a big city
- A small group of municipalities around Winnipeg's fringe (Headingly, E/W St. Paul) who want to continue to take advantage of having their local populations work and shop in Winnipeg and use all its associated infrastructure, but live and pay tax in the lower-tax jurisdiction. These municipalities aren't interested in density targets or incurring any of the costs associated with being near a big city and share infrastructure, but want the benefit of being a bedroom community
- A large group of further-out rural municipalities who have little to no experience in legitimate urban planning and have no idea what's going on besides the odd residential or light industrial development here or there, and are generally run by rural folks who are most susceptible to conspiracy theories like those surrounding the 15 minute city, etc.

This isn't like trying to come up with a regional plan in the GTA, where you've got multiple big players like Toronto, Vaughn, Richmond Hill, York, Burlington, Mississauga, and Hamilton around the table, all of whom have legitimate experience governing as large municipalities. This was basically Winnipeg plus a bunch of tiny RMs trying to level the playing field policy-wise which was inevitably going to lead to no action at all.

Unpopular opinion, but the Province should focus on having Winnipeg annex certain RMs around it to equalize tax rates, standardize infrastructure servicing levels, and streamline planning instead of hoping to get a bunch of small villages and towns and one single large city to all agree on policy and land use guidelines/densities.

I think we’re great at planning and studying. it’s all we ever do around here. it’s implementing the plans, that never gets done, and as usual, it’s because of the government.

Lolz. Yes the only municipality that should benefit from development in Manitoba is winnipeg.

Loved the “rural people are dumb” angle you threw in there too.

You should try growing your own food.

I agree with this. I think you can add the desire to believe they've left behind the social ills found in parts of of the city. People I know in West St. Paul like to alternatively congratulate themselves for leaving the "crime and poverty" of the city behind, and living in fear that "those people" will make their way into their enclave.

I've wondered about this as well, especially with the idea of annexing the parts of Rosser within the perimeter. I don't think it will happen, though, as politically it would be suicide with rural voters. Winnipeg is already seen by some in smaller towns as the "black hole" that swallows provincial resources.
