They’re still reporting it as integration with Line 2 instead of Stage 2? Which one is it? I don’t understand what kind of software integration between Lines 1 and 2 (if any) would be necessary.

Ottawa’s Line 1 LRT system will be fully shut down for planned testing and service adjustment on Dec. 14.

The closure is required for “system integration testing of train control software” on the Stage 2 O-Train eastern extension, Transit General Manager Renée Amilcar wrote in a memo to the mayor and city councillors on Tuesday.

Amilcar’s memo said the goal was to create “seamless travel on the extended line from Blair Station to Trim Station as part of the O-Train East extension.”

Construction on the 12.5-kilometre Stage 2 eastern extension construction began in 2021. When completed, it will connect Blair Station with five new stations further along in Ottawa’s east end: Montreal; Jeanne d’Arc; Orléans Boulevard; Place d’Orléans; and Trim.

The eastern extension will not be available for service until sometime in 2025.

Meanwhile, the north-south Trillium Line extension is set to open on Jan. 6 — more than two years after its original target date — following months of testing.

“We understand that this service adjustment is disruptive and thank our customers for their ongoing patience,” Amilcar said.

During Saturday’s shutdown of Line 1, also known as the Confederation Line, R1 bus service will operate between Tunney’s Pasture and Blair stations between 6 a.m. and 2 a.m.

In addition, shuttle buses will run between St-Laurent and Cyrville stations in the east end and between Lees Station and Mackenzie King Bridge in central Ottawa, Amilcar’s memo said.

Regular service for Line 1 is planned to resume on Dec. 15, the memo added.

How many dozen more times will we need to shut down Line 1 to accomodate the east extension, then repeat with the west extension shortly afterwards.

Indeed, and don't shop downtown. I was planning to shop on Saturday and this definitely affects my plans.

With the tax break it might be the busiest day in many years. But who would take transit to go shopping? Certainly not anyone who makes such decisions.

6pm has long been the cut-off for "frequent" service. Many "frequent" routes drop from 15 minute headways to 30 minute headways right at 6pm.

Naturally, "New Ways to Bus" isn't going to change that either.

It does seem like activities pertaining to integration between stages 1 and 2 are becoming a regular thing, and will continue to occur until stage 2 is complete. If that's the case, full day weekend closures cannot continue this way. It's unacceptable to keep planning such disruptive closures. It really shows how out of touch OCT are for them to be so trigger happy with full-day weekend closures in favour of using overnight hours to do the work.

a) overnight hours aren't necessarily long enough to do the work

b) the trains actually need to be running to carry out the work (testing signaling integration), which means all other regular overnight work can't happen

It's not that straightforward to just "do it overnight".

LOVE getting in the line to park at Rideau Centre. (The only reason I'd take the train today is to go to the Market and avoid a claustrophobic and expensive visit to the Rideau Centre Overheated Garage). So I guess that's out for this weekend.

Despite the annoyance, this is super exciting. Is it possible that LRT East rolls out on time??

AND under budget??

With such a long wait for all this work, I think the steady opening of the 3 sections (S, E, W) is going to feel lightning fast compared to the last 5-7 years.

The trains are pretty snazzy and the downtown tunnel is so much better than my recent experiences in Edmonton and Calgary.







Now if only we had a downtown gathering place or facility to really test out this new system...maybe somewhere near the junction of the different lines

Exactly! Same for the OR174 work - multiple full closures on Saturday?!? And you never know when those hit unless you're on social media. Sorry but a PVMS sign after Blair warning of the highway closure at Montreal Rd is useless. What a clown show!

I’m sure there’s a balance to be struck. A planned closure to Line 1 during regular service hours should be treated as a last resort. Given how frequently they’ve been shutting down the line for parts or the entirety of weekends these past few months, it doesn’t feel like the impact on riders is apparent to them. Hell, with the crowding we saw on single-car trains during summer weekends, I’m not sure they even know people use the O-train on weekends.

Considering Line 2 has been closed for over 4 years, I won't shed a tear for the occasional weekend closures of the 174, even if they do impact me. Small price to pay.

At least misery loves company, and we aren't the only ones with full line shutdowns, although we're the only ones with planned ones.

I think this is the price of ATC. Older signaling systems wouldn't shut down everything everywhere. The benefits of ATC are obvious, but this is a drawback

Without reliable service, ridership will not recover. How many employers will put up with delayed employees repeatedly, after reading the Toronto situation.
