[Moncton] Downtown Developments - Page 411

This is just the start for this area of town. With Lafford owning the former Tim's location land, it's only a matter of time before they put down a development there once Gateway Towers is up and running.

A big 360 for what was once a very dumpy part of town, a spin-off from the Avenir Centre.

Does anyone know what is in the old New York Subs location? There's lots of stuff inside with plants and books and tables. Your see people in there sometimes on the evenings but I don't see any signage or internet posts for anything at that address when Googling.

290-294 high is the same property so perhaps those renting the apartment are using it for storage? I don't believe there is any business there and the property is still for sale.

If you peak inside it's quite obviously meant to be some sort of diner or café. But it's been like that for an unusually long time so who knows.

Out of curiosity, I just took a look at a couple of commercial realtor sites for Moncton, looking at office space for lease. There's a huge amount of vacant space downtown, a lot of which has been sitting empty for years.

I remember reading a story where the Calgary downtown was practically a ghost town with the downturn in the oil industry and also the pandemic. The vacancy rate was over 30%. They started to convert the vacant spaces to residential, and have revitalized their downtown. The city incentive to developers has dramatically increased their tax base, a win-win outcome.

I know we're not Calgary, but it would be great for our downtown if this vacant space could somehow be filled. Could there be a win-win solution applicable in Moncton? I don't know.

Hopefully with news of UNB expanding their presence in the city. I've been dropping comments on their LinkedIn hoping they'd expand their NP program (since Nursing already has a presence here).

I drove on assumption today and noticed 7 new significantly larger utility posts, made of metal. These were near the courthouse.

Yes, they are moving the lines to the south side of Assumption - a necessary precondition for the Ashford/Downing project.

It's unfortunate that they didn't bury those eyesores. If they have to dig up Assumption anyway, why not bury the wires?

Yes, it's a shame not to take any opportunity to put urban utilities underground.

They also had to cut some some trees at one of the parks so that all could have been prevented.

Par for the course for NB Power. Moncton/Riverview/Dieppe might well be better served by a municipal utility a la SJ Energy.

Saint John certainly has it's share of issues but electrical delivery and service is head and shoulders above the rest of the province.

They are starting to put the cladding on the back side of the Westgate Building (Tomato Building) at Main/Vaughan Harvey. Height aside, I actually like how this building is turning out.
