The Royal Towers Hotel was built on the BC Electric administration building site in 1961, incorporating the original building as part of the structure. A key aspect of Uptown was its embrace of early modernism along with post-World War II growth, while at the same time retaining many of its early homes and character.

So of that $60 million I can't imagine all of it going to housing...
I believe the motion was to dedicate 80% of the amenity funds to affordable housing. A noble thing to do but perhaps not wise or balanced given the amenity needs in the rapidly growing Downtown New Westminster area.

Council gave three readings to this today (Councillors Fontaine and Minhas opposed), so it'll be going ahead with the Master Plan planning now.

With 80% of the DCCs dedicated to affordable housing instead of community amenities. Not sure if that's why Fontaine and Minhas were in opposition, but I'm not pleased with that. The area needs some kind of community centre/recreation facility/library, dare I say pool!?, y'know the kinds of capital projects municipalities should be providing instead of picking up the slack from the Province/Feds on subsidized housing.

Yep that's a problem that is the same around the region. Just like schools the province drags their feet on funding.

Nice that some of the new proposals are being recognized, they missed the lower twelfth street proposal adjacent to Columbia Square and the associated planning work for that area.

Also neglected to mention Sapperton Green, although it's a poster child for the never ending delays large projects like that have to contend with.

Edit:

There's also the Columbia Theatre redevelopment

No mention of Sapperon Green, I keep hoping that project will spring back to life.

FWIW In 2023 it was listed in the No Recent Activity section but the 2024 update has it under "B2 - Under Review (Committee and Public Consultation Underway)"

Great to see this moving forward and 30+ storeys in this end of Downtown New West. There really need to be some small scale retail + a small format grocery store in this area though.

The ex-Toyota, now Vinfast, dealership site recently sold for $16M ($300 psf land) while the ex-Ford, now Kabani, site is currently for sale.

The lower 12th area is really starting to get busy fast.

The city of New West planning office has got to be overwhelmed with all these high density proposals and updates to local planning areas, not to mention the OCP update. I wonder if they're doing anything to expand capacity, I'm sure planning consultants are doing well right now.

Is this the listing you are talking about or another one? https://www.collierscanada.com/en-ca/pro...nster-british-columbia-canada/can2013972

I haven't heard any updates on the Lower 12th Street area planning process. I think there was supposed to be at least a city report update by the early winter with consultations pencilled in for the spring. I have no idea what might be happening behind the scenes. Part of me wonders if the city is recalibrating with additional developers in play. The situation is changing from one or two "catalyst developments" needing a framework to all of the dealerships aside from Key West having been purchased by developers.

From the Burnaby Now:

Burnaby Now, New Westminster Record, Tri-City News to close

According to the statement, these three newspapers - which ceased print publication in August 2023 and transitioned to online-only - will cease publication altogether later this spring:

Quote:
"...the closure will be no later than April 21 for Burnaby Now/New Westminster Record, and May 21 for Tri-City News..."
