Okay, by that same article, Swifties also spend $93 million per show, mostly in the host city.

Which hopefully is comparable to what FIFA fans will pay. Are you arguing just to argue again?

I'm pretty sure it's mostly security and 🞵🞵🞵🞵, like the Olympics had a heavy budget for.

$500M, I can't see the benefits outweighing the cost:

I'm generally supportive of sporting events, but most of them are money pits.

Sure seems like you are. Judging by Toronto and previous Cups, FIFA will also demand tax/fee exemptions, free offices and free transit from their host city, in addition to covering up construction sites and possibly even cancelling local events to remove competition (Chow et al put their foot down on that one; will ABC do the same?).

By contrast, Taylor Swift & associates DGAF about most of that.

$500M is a lot to wrap your head around but the government expects $400M of that to be covered by direct revenue from the event, and if the claim of $1B in economic activity only ends up being 1/10 of that, then that's still a win.

Again, notice how we're discussing whether FIFA is worth it, but never whether Taylor Swift is worth it? And further than that people complain about the government not funding any local events that aren't ever expected to turn a profit. Anyway!

I didn't bring up FIFA. I think Taylor will be a net positive to the local economy. I don't think FIFA will, but it's worth doing anyway. I would not be supportive of being an Olympic host city again. Vancouver 2010 may be one of the last financially reasonable games.

Don't look at me, I'm perfectly fine with the fact that we ditched the Santa Claus Parade and the Canada Day fireworks. IIRC we're still chasing down the Formula E organizers for the refunds.

Check again - I didn't reply to anybody. I was agreeing with Warren and following up on my previous comment, and you overreacted. Apology accepted.

Did the city pay for these signs that are all over town, or did the concert promoter?

You might not realise this, but I make a point of not responding to you because I know you'll initiate first.

Acting, of course, like you've never stepped to me before, and that you aren't responding right now. Funny how you say I'm the instigator, when you've been in even more arguments over the past month than I have (and a large part of mine are with you).

I'm just not used to these massive events where you got people flowing in for the show, plus people who have been to the other shows more than once already and it's such a massive sensation. I don't see that much media attention with Matallica, Pet Shop Boys or Roger Waters.

Also yes, her music is bland, but this is based on somaone with tastes in the above artists.

Yet CTV reports that like I said, the taxpayers don't win as the city's running a loss.

CTV fact checkers need to put a little more effort in, or at least more than zero. They say that Vancouver is looking into hotel event taxes to help fund events... Are they unaware of Vancouver's 2.5% hotel tax and Metro Vancouver's 3% hotel tax? Sure, the hotels are always full but when hotel prices are 10x the typical cost that means Vancouver's getting 10x the taxes.

I'm not a fan of her music either but I admire how hardworking she is. Those concerts and the production of it is something else. Her stage presence and performance also seems very strong from what I can see - a full entertainment package. To me it's the music that's holding it back.

Isn't that tax solely going to fund the costs around the FIFA World Cup? And the Metro Vancouver taxes are mainly aimed at tourism promotion?

https://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2023FIN0007-000098

It seems like COV is looking at "more taxes" even if the CTV report is confusing to say the least.

More broadly, Sim also shared that the City of Vancouver is eager to support hosting more major events and initiatives. However, a key challenge lies in the lack of financial incentives for the City to recoup its costs, as the benefits, such as increased sales tax revenues from higher visitation, go to the provincial and federal governments, for example.

It doesn't really matter where it's going, it's a hotel tax. Every extra dollar Vancouver makes from Taylor Swift hotel surge prices is an extra dollar the taxpayer is off the hook for.

I was looking at the Rosewood rates for last week. They started at @ $480 in the early part of the week to $800 on Thursday and a whopping $3,200 by Friday. That’s quite the tax windfall.

I have family who flew in from ON to see it with their kids. I met them for breakfast at the hotel and was blown away by how many people had obviously travelled to Vancouver just for the concert. Pretty impressive.

"Thousands of fans from around the world have travelled to Vancouver to see Swift's final three performances. Officials said up to 70 per cent of ticket holders were not from the Vancouver area, including about 40 per cent who were international travellers." [CBC]

The demographics downtown and on the train are completely different. Lots of blondes. Hearing people asking if Main St Science World is the right stop to get off at. Overall the vibes are good.
