There was a blurb on the WFP website that the counterweight is going to be taken down to allow for "extensive repairs" to the bridge. Not really more details than that.

Counterweight Removal Begins on Forks’ Rail Bridge
December 3, 2024 10:42 AM | News

WINNIPEG — The Forks has initiated the removal of the counterweight from its rail bridge, marking the first phase of an extensive repair project.

The bridge, closed since June 2023, serves as a vital route to Niizhoziibean and The Forks site, with no confirmed timeline for reopening.

“It’s a really disappointing situation and we totally empathize with visitors’ and commuters’ frustration,” officials with The Forks said in a statement earlier this year.

During construction, the public is advised to use alternate routes. Artist Mike Valcourt‘s mural, formerly on the counterweight, will be recreated inside The Forks Market.

Those interested in supporting repairs of the historic rail bridge can make a donation to The Forks Foundation.

Another article clarifies that the counterweight is not going back up. So it'll just be steel there I guess.

I find it so disappointing that some of so called Big Projects for the city, especially some downtown, were to have been announced late summer to early autumn have not been mentioned at all.

I think he means all the railside bidders that were announced as selected and still haven't broke ground.

That end will look the same as the CN mainline (aka highline) bridge beside Manitoba Blue Cross Baseball stadium where the counter weight was removed years ago when CN got permission from the Federal Government to keep the bridge permanently closed.

I was trying to find some old pics of the Victoria Bay redevelopment from about 14 or so years ago, but not much out there. Similar to what will happen with the larger Winnipeg store, it was stripped to the concrete floors and pillars with the heritage exterior retained and restored in full, plus earthquake proofing and the hole cut in the middle.

A recent real estate video will give you a good idea of how they create a core, but I believe the Winnipeg one will be a bit different plus the atrium in the middle will be open to the public. In Victoria it’s just for the residents and the Public Market and other retail is below this grade.

So, here is a tidbit of info...I am not going to say where yet (it might have been leaked here before) but a new residential complex featuring a 12 and a 7 storey building should start in 2025 in downtown.

If you're talking about Portage Place I'm going to be pissed.

Thanks for the tidbit! Any idea when it'll get announced.

Who wants to make a guess where it'll go? I'm going to hazard a guess and say it's part of the Fairmont complex redevelopment, maybe near Nutty Club.

My guess is the site of the old Windsor Hotel and the adjacent parking lot...maybe also including Mitzi's building on the corner?

Wherever it ends up, hopefully it's a parking lot filler and not a teardown and rebuild.

Edit...looks like I was correct. Based on this description, Mitzi's site is not included.

Awesome news!

Re: the Portage Ave properties in which Dominion News was located. Did we hear something about re-development of those properties in the last year or so. Or just the DN was closing?

Well that is interesting… The asking price for Mitzi’s was a little rich and the parking behind is a separate parcel used by the building across the laneway and owned by others. My guess it was not available. We have the lot at Fort & St Mary. Maybe it will be developable in my lifetime!

I hear they are building a huge Princess Auto superstore in Elmwood. Does anyone know the location?
