one of the most important art galleries on this planet is the Tate Modern. It's just a rectangular box. If you want to have a indigenous feel to it, make it a massive long house.
Well, to be fair part of the reason for original Tate Modern's boxiness is because it it within the old Bankside Power Station. Herzog & de Meuron (surprise)designed the extension and its a bit more swoopy.

But yeah, somewhere like the recent Broad Museum in LA utilizes a basic box shape albeit with interesting cladding. No reason they can't do that here and keep the copper weaving cladding.

I mean, they've already got that right now with the old courthouse (which they're kind of squandering). Think somebody up top needs to manage their expectations; if we can no longer afford the next Niteroi, then we can't, no shame in that.

So when you have a $50 billion art collection you can have a nondescript building?

VAG's collection and exhibitions are just average at best most of the time which is why they probably want the "iconic" building. I mean there's a longer list of art galleries and museum with over the top architecture versus MoMAs. What's the logic behind it? Who knows.

They should also design the gallery building so that it can be expanded in the future.

Compared to The Broad, at $600m our gallery would be a bargain. The new extension of that gallery will be 55,000 sq ft, and is expected to cost at least $100m US, ($135m CA). Our gallery was planned to be just under six times that size.

A box shape is probably only cheaper when you use cheaper materials that requires less labour. In the VAG case you can obviously value engineer out cost from removing structurally expensive elements of the design but it's probably not a massive reduction in the overall budget.

The David Geffen Galleries is going to be 350,000 sq feet of space (110K gallery) for $650 million USD but rumours of it increasing to $900 million USD.

I don't if this is symptomatic of a governance issue or just dealing with a hangover from plans of the previous CEO. For example, I got an ad on my social media touting comedy night at their 1931 Gallery Bistro. Comedy night?! I thought they launched as a (misguidedly) high-end restaurant? They tossed out the previous (busy) restaurant for that? Who had that brilliant idea?

Such a shame. I hope they don't need to start from the drawing board and leverage some of the ideas they came up with (keeping the interior courtyard etc...). Perhaps getting rid of the cantilevers to help save on the costs.

Maybe if they reduce the amount of the copper weave by adding some of the fluted glass exterior that was in a previous rendition. I'm concerned about a full redesign at this stage.

Move VAG to Granville Island with some new mid-bridge bus stop and connection to the gallery/down to the island.

Are you thinking of the old Emily Carr campus? Not much room elsewhere.

I was thinking that but the concrete plant kind of blocks it. Or the section directly east of the bridge where there's some retail/parking garages.

What a joke. When is this going to realistically be built now? 2045?

If they'd focused five years ago on showing off their Emily Carr and Group of Seven collections instead of... whatever the hell these are, they might have enough money by now. Sometimes you gotta sell out a little to pay the bills.

I always thought that the new VAG design was boxy and hokey-looking. If ever they do build a new VAG designed from scratch, I hope it is more dramatic and inspiring than the (thankfully) now-scrapped design.

I hardly see VAG as being relevant anymore. I used to carry an annual membership in the 00s, but dropped it because their special exhibits had to be amongst the most pointless things possible, and it's gotten just worse over time. They've got little understanding that they need to have exhibits that'll draw the crowds in. The last time they probably did that is when they had the Da Vinci exhibit god knows how long ago.

And was it public knowledge that Rennie will not be donating his art collection to VAG, and instead it's going to a national gallery back east? He said that this morning.
