Realistically, I think YYC will replace YVR as the major airport hub in Western Canada if the sea level rises and yvr has to relocate.

Looks like WestJet provoked Air Canada as they added flights to Tampa and Raleigh in Summer 2025. Air Canada also added more capacity to Austin, Denver, and Miami.

Quote:
MONTREAL, Dec. 2, 2024 /CNW/ - Air Canada announced today its most comprehensive transborder schedule from its Vancouver (YVR) hub. Three new transborder routes to Tampa, Raleigh and Nashville, plus more capacity to Austin, Denver and Miami have been added, offering even more exciting options for travellers on both sides of the border. Together with its partner United Airlines, Air Canada will offer up to 7,700 seats on 58 daily non-stop flights to 21 US destinations next summer, representing an 11% increase in seat capacity from summer 2024. All flights are now available for sale at aircanada.com, through Air Canada Contact Centres and via travel agents.

"We are pleased to further expand our YVR hub with new year-round flights to Tampa, seasonal services to Raleigh and Nashville, and more capacity to Austin, Denver and Miami. Air Canada continues to reinforce its position as the leading carrier between Canada and the US with new flights to fast-growing metropolitan areas and sought out destinations. Our robust network means customers in Western Canada have more options to explore all that the US has to offer, and for our American customers to explore beautiful British Columbia. At Air Canada's Pacific gateway, our newest services further bolsters our sixth-freedom strategy by efficiently bridging North America and growing international destinations across the Asia-Pacific region," said Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President, Revenue and Network Planning, and President, Cargo at Air Canada.

"More network news will be coming soon," stated Mr. Galardo.

Interesting, looks like YVR suddenly become battleground between AC and WS

AC added BNA, which was a route exclusively served by WS.

In return, WS increased BNA and added AUS, which was exclusively served by AC.

Now, AC retaliate by increasing frequency for both BNA and AUS, and also add TPA (new add by WS from YVR) and RDU (new destination for WS from YYC)

This represent a additional plane for YVR specifically to target WS, splitting the frequency 3/2/1/1 for RDU/TPA/AUS/BNA.

I'll take AC's word of running TPA year-round

[EDIT]
Also noticed AC had added some flights back, now both IAH and IAD are set to run with daily flight, instead of 6/5 weekly from the last update. This require another new plane and leaves a 4x weekly hole on days 1345, morning departure. Given it's not part of this PR, maybe there's something new for domestic as well? Need to check all the destinations WS launched recently..

Code:
Morning departure:
CUN 2 7
PVR 6
MIA	1 3 5 7
YQB 2 4 6

Afternoon departure (YVR outbound):
AUS	1 345 7
BNA 2 4 67
TPA 2 6
RDU	1 3 5

Or perhaps a return to year-round OGG. Not sure how far Maui has recovered but that’s definitely a missing link.

Why am I hearing that emirates will replace yvr next year with year round 359 services? Hope this is true.

Maybe STL? STL was looking into providing subsidies to AC to run the route. but again, morning departure is better timed for SE Asia/Oceania and I would think STL market would be more Japan/Korea based via YVR. would be great to see it though. Otherwise they could add 4x weekly back to YHZ for morning departure.

What do you mean replace? They aren't here.

I assume that news is that YUL's 772 will be replaced with an A359.

Unless EK and AC have realized they got it backwards and AC should be serving YUL-DXB and EK should be serving YVR-DXB...

Unreal. It is so clearly a shot at WS, they didn't even try to hide it.

YVR-RDU? Really? That's even more illogical than YYC-RDU since there's no Delta feed for AC on the other end like there is for WS.

But hey I'll take it. Would love to see AC and WS scrap it out over YVR... maybe AC will even start responding to some of the Europe moves WS has been making at YYC. But I won't hold my breath on that one.

I think they meant replace Air Canada with Emirates on YVR-DXB. But yes I agree I think EK and AC have it backwards, EK should be here and AC should be at YUL

That would be the most logical thing to do. Given the Russian airspace restrictions it never made sense that EK went to YUL and AC at YVR.

AC should be out of YUL to DXB and expanded to daily, and EK daily (or whatever frequency makes sense) out or YVR.

But any swap would look an awful lot like market collusion so I'm pretty doubtful anything like that happens.

Ya they've been doing those job fairs for ages in multiple cities in Canada:
https://curiocity.com/emirates-calgary-job-fair-2024/

Has nothing to do with air service unfortunately.

Let's be honest here. AC is head and shoulders above WS when it comes to YVR, and especially on the transborder/international front. WS adding a few secondary YVR-US routes isn't going to change that. They would need to do a lot more in order to properly compete with AC out of YVR.

Market share at YVR in terms of total seats - November 2024
AC: 46.8% - 1,079,478
WS: 21.4% - 493,347
F8: 5.5% - 126,441
UA: 2.6% - 59,586
PD: 2.0% - 47,256

Just read on airlineroute.net on the AC thread a year-round longhaul route to be announced ex YVR on Thursday

Just posting it here without any evidence of credence or not

Perhaps this is the MNL rumours floating around.

I guess we will wait and see.

Yeah this is a big hole in the network.

As for the long haul route I'm guessing MNL. MEL would work as well but it's such a long flight, maybe they'd rather do MNL instead especially with the growing traffic (not that MNL is a short route haha)

Update on airline route.net has MNL pegged at 3pw starting April.

Again posting without any verification or further evidence.

Coincides with the reduction in BNE and DUB

So still a potential gap of two per week?

There's no room for 3x weekly for April though, unless they are shortening BKK season, which seems unlikely as the route just increase to daily for March.

Or, maybe YVR will be keeping a couple of widebody a month longer to double up the SIN/BKK rotation, before it get send back East for summer TATL service

Jan-Mar schedule:
1 each PVG, PEK, NRT, ICN, HKG, LHR
2 each BKK, SYD, BNE
4 for the rotation SIN(5), AKL(5), DXB(4)
Total 16 planes

Apr schedule:
1 each PVG, PEK, NRT, ICN, HKG, LHR
0.5 for KIX(4)
2 each SYD, BNE
2 for the rotation SIN(4), BKK(3)
Total 14 planes

May-Sept schedule:
1 each PVG, PEK, NRT, ICN, HKG, LHR, FRA
1 for the rotation KIX(4), DUB(3)
2 for SYD
4 for the rotation SIN(4), BNE(5), ???(5)
Total 14 planes

And if the new route is indeed year-round, then next winter will be interesting - either another new route, big increase in frequency for some of the routes, or one of SIN/AKL/DXB/BKK need to go? If they keep everything, then YVR will need 18 planes. They are really banking on the XLR being delivered on time and begin to operate long-hual service by December next year?

S19 was the last time YVR have 18 widebody planes... but at that time, AC's widebody fleet was much bigger.
1 each PVG, PEK, NRT, ICN, HKG, FRA
2 for LHR(14)
0.8 for TPE(6)
2 for the rotation KIX(5), ZRH(5), CDG(4)
2 each SYD, BNE, DEL
1.2 for MEL(4)
0.6 for DUB(4) shared with YUL
