NYC Ferry hits record ridership, but system's usage is still peanuts compared to subways

The NYC Ferry system hit a new yearly ridership record last week, which city officials say is a sign the highly subsidized service is a worthwhile investment for taxpayers.

The ferries have carried nearly 6.9 million rides so far in 2024 — more than any other calendar year since the service launched in 2017, according to the city Economic Development Corporation, which oversees the service.

I've never really understood the affinity for the R-44-46 outside of just personal nostalgia I suppose. They're loud and it's clear the TA experiment of trying to save money and I guess increase capacity by using 75 foot rolling stock was a mistake and ill suited to the system, especially the tighter curves on the BMT. Unlike the R-32 or 40/42 which were superior all around, the "specialness" of the 44/46 apparently is akin to somebody's high schhol AMC Pacer where a handful of memorable firsts may or may not have been experienced in the back seat.

I like their soft lighting, fake wood panels, and their forward/backwards seats (although I no longer fit in the window seat anymore

). I also thought they were fairly quiet with a cushy ride back in the 90s and early 00s. But it's 20 years later, and it's clear that age has wreaked havoc on whatever sound attenuation and ride quality they had left.

Speaking of lack of sound attenuation, you mentioned the R-32 and R40-42. Sitting inside any of them was loud as heck at the end of their lifespans (same for the R-38). If anything, the 44/46 definitely feels quieter.

and i liked the heat grills.

i guess we can’t have the social seating style since nobody has social skills anymore and no one gets along with others.

Longitudinal seating has won because it's the best way to increase circulation and capacity. I don't think it has as much to do with the perceived decline or threatened existence of manners and social skills.

The R44/R46 always looked like it would be more at home on Metro-North or LIRR than on the subway.

It would have been cool to have the "State of the Art" trains. I had this picture as my desktop wallpaper for a while, and I always have "Do the Hustle" playing in my head whenever I see it:

I do wish the SOAC program had inspired more aggressive styling in US rolling stock design which just now seems to be reaching a point that these prototype cars where displaying in the early 70s! The new BART fleet is a great example, where you could make a strong argument the original A/B cars look more "futuristic" than the new Alstom cars, though they are great looking in their own right. It was just a different time back then with the relationship between modern "cutting edge" industrial design and public taste. We don't seem to have the same universal enthusiasm, optimism or appetite to push for that sort of thing in this country anymore. Seeing foreign rolling stock is just depressing nine times out of ten. They're not all great but the importance placed on excellence in design makes me so envious as an American. Don't get me going in the R-211.

As for surface materials. I think it's safe to say carpet was never a good idea BUT if they could develop a padded seat upholstery that never got dirty and resisted vandalism, man I'd love to see some non-plastic comfortable seating return to NY subway cars.

I took Greyhound this week from the Port Authority bus terminal. While the bus service itself was fine, the terminal is in great need of improvement.

Mayor Eric Adams on Sunday announced a $152.7 million investment to transform Fifth Avenue from Bryant Park to Central Park into a pedestrian-friendly boulevard.

The redesign will expand sidewalks by 46%, reduce traffic lanes and add greenery, creating a safer, more walkable space, City Hall said. The project aims to give a boost to Fifth Avenue’s economic output, which generates $44 billion in wages annually and supports 313,000 jobs, the mayor said.
