It had to be somewhat realistic.

The real Main Street Tower was the friends we made along the way.

Surely the planning commission will oppose a tower there on 300E as it will disrupt the transition from downtown to other neighborhoods and will dilute the visual and economic significance of the D-1 zone.

From this article from the subreddit, those were some of the arbitrary reasons the planning commission rejected an upzone at nearby 256 E 300 S. The owner wants to build a 185-foot community-oriented hotel with 262 rooms. Worthington, at about twice the height of the proposed hotel, is only like 100 feet away from this property. Literally across the street. I am concerned by what this decision means for other future towers in central city and the proposal we just rejoiced over

As others said on the sub, the city council has the final say. The NIMBYs are relentless! So do not be afraid to send a brief email to [email protected] or your council member as they really do listen to the comments! Just wanted to include it here to make it easy Happy Thanksgiving

The new tower proposal at least has the advantage of being next to D-1 zoning, as opposed to the hotel proposal that was shot down, which was surronded by R-MU I believe.

But that said yeah, I haven't been impressed with the planning commission at all lately when it comes to height-related decisions.

I know I'm a bitch on this but this is what happens when you let randos run the commission.

I agree with you Comrade on this issue. There have been so many times the PC makes a decision like this last one and I just shake my head and wonder if they are just trying to thwart urban progress.

This was true in 1983. I do believe, (my opinion only) that the city planning commission has had an agenda of purposely keeping the downtown area small.

I still remember to this day the segment from a broadcast from channel 2 in 1983 that the planning commission admitted they wanted to keep SLC from becoming a "Los Angeles" and intended to keep the downtown area intentionally small.

I don't know. When Salt Lake City (and suburbs) more of less copy the Los Angeles style of zoning and land use, doesn't that make the region destined to become one?

Having lived in both regions, the similarities are more plentiful than the differences, I'm afraid.

I would also argue that keeping downtown small would encourage the suburban sprawl that would make us more like Los Angels.
