Did I just read a quote from an extreme conservative premier suggest establishing a crown corporation?

I am surprised. Conservatives in Ontario and now Alberta expanding inter-city rail. Very unexpected. Lets commend them for doing the right thing and moving that infrastructure forward.

In BC we have BC Rail, however it is a shell of what it use to be. Time to have it become more than a holding company and start to actually operate trains again.

Conservatives in Canada are pro-infrastructure, at least nowadays. That's a part big part of Ford's brand.

I'm glad we're getting back to a spot where rail service is considered an integral part of the Canadian identity, right and left, east and west, rich and poor. Even urban and rural.

Western Canada could not (and can not) exist without rail being the backbone. I really hope we continue to invest in these big rail projects.

Don’t think we’re anywhere near there yet… but I appreciate the optimism!

Unless it's infrastructure for a form of transportation he has a personal grudge against. Then he's willing to spend tens of millions of dollars to get rid of it for no benefit.

This is true. Toronto's waterfront streetcar extension has languished for years as Ford refuses to fund it. Obviously he's not a big bike lane dude either.

He is spending huge on 'big' infrastructure though like subway extensions and freeways.

At the end of the day, bike infrastructure is dirt cheap. It can be built once he's gone, and quickly.

It's funny that Liberal governments like the cheap and fast stuff because it's easy and doesn't really ruffle feathers - but conservative governments seem to like chasing after the hard stuff because they are happy to cut through the regulatory maze in the way of big infrastructure projects.

The Ontario Line alone would be a generational infrastructure project for most provincial governments. To think that it's only a small fraction of his infrastructure program.. is sort of mind blowing in a way.

I think there's some truth to that but at the same time it might be painting the Conservatives with too broad a stroke. While it was Doug who managed to get the relief line **cough** I mean Ontario line started, the need for a relief line was known since the early 80s yet the list of governments that didn't get it started include two full terms under the Harris PCs. And it was Harris who also canceled the original Eglinton line while the current version started construction under the McGuinty Liberals. Yet it was Rob Ford who pushed for the underground version.

So it seems to me that it's specifically a Ford desire to tackle big expensive projects as long as they believed it improves things for car drivers such as moving transit vehicles underground. Which I think is reinforced by Doug's farcical 401 tunnel proposal. It's like they're willing to spend an unlimited amount of (other people's) money to satisfy their desire to get the plebs out of their sight and out of their way.

Trudeau government to announce high-speed rail plans from Toronto to Quebec City: sources

Quote:
OTTAWA — The federal government is set to announce plans on Wednesday for a high-speed rail line from Toronto to Quebec City, the Star has learned.

Two sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the anticipated project will be unveiled in Montreal, where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Transport Minister Anita Anand were slated to make an announcement Wednesday.

Both sources confirmed the project — which the government expects to build with a group of private-sector partners — will be to build high-speed rail from Toronto to Quebec City.

Neither of them shared details of the plan Tuesday evening, including how much it would cost, how long it could take to construct, or how much it could cut current train-travel times through Canada’s most populous region.

The Star granted the sources anonymity because they weren’t authorized to share news ahead of the announcement. Anand’s office did not respond to requests for comment from the Star on Tuesday evening.

Press conference happening now. Just the latest in our great history of election-time HSR announcements that go nowhere because the announcing government are about to be turfed. But it's something.

To me Toronto - QC makes the most sense for high speed rail in Canada and is long overdue. Calgary - Edmonton (and potentially Banff added ) also has a decent case for it. Time to end the talk and get these projects going.

Very disappointed to see Toronto-KW-London-Windsor left out.

You know the end of a government is nigh, when the Corridor High Speed Rail announcement comes out.

Noticed that the CBC article says something like "Construction won't begin until the design phase is complete, which will take 4-5 years". So to me, it's just like all the other HSR project announcements we've had through the years.

It's a no-brainer project, but as usual it's likely just going to get backburnered again until the outgoing PM needs some cheap brownie points again.
