Wish we could get more height in that area. Nothing absurd but a few 10-15 footers stories would look really nice.

My guess is it's a classic "5 over 1" development. I know when they switch from lumber ("stick frame") to steel, the price about doubles. That's why 5-over-1 are showing up pretty much everywhere in the country right now.

Until every surface parking lot gobbles up, I personally don't mind seeing SLC fill up with 5-over-1. Creates a nice "Brooklyn"-intensity level of density that makes it feel nicely urban.

I do wish we could change so laws to promote more condo (owner-occupied) density rather than it just being more ways for hedge funds to 🞵🞵🞵🞵 rents out of regular people.

I’d personally prefer the city not to be littered with countless 5-over-1s. They are cheap, entirely forgettable, and stick around for decades as older buildings with actual character and charm are leveled.

Yup. They're soulless.

I mean, it's a step forward from the city I remember twenty years ago. The one with tons and tons of surface parking and a strip of fast food along 400 South and North Temple.

Yes it's souless right now. Let it age a bit. And they are the population/customers who can feed even better development in the future. (I do agree that demolishing meaningful old buildings is bad. Saving old for the sake of old isn't great, either).

I think they'll be just as soulless in 20 years as they are today - if not more so as I don't expect these buildings to age all that well.

Go read some of the reviews on the Metro - which is one of the first of these styles built downtown (in what, 2003?). Or Elevate (used to be Emigration Court or something years ago when it was built at the start of the 21st Century).

They're shoddy buildings, especially since they're supposed to be high-end. It's the same with Citifront. They're all garbage in the long run, unfortunately.

And while many of those older apartments are garbage too, at least they're pretty-to-look at garbage lmao

You know, like the Smith Apartments that were home to Harry and Lloyd in Dumb and Dumber

Owners of Snowbird look to rezone Downtown property for new high-rise

Quote:
While it’s early, the materials Raven One submitted in its rezone request show an interest in building up and adding around 500 housing units.

Conceptual renderings for the corner building appear to show a high-rise with at least 21 stories, some of them double-height. A second, seven-story building would sit across from the high-rise, separated by an elevated courtyard in the middle.

Yes, finally! I love this because it pushes the skyline a little further east from Worthington and will fit nicely with any tower to be built east of harmons

I don't know much but I am going to guess it will slot in between Liberty Sky (250ft) and South Temple Tower (274ft)

Thats a good looking development.

I agree with you rockies this will definitely have a big impact widening the skyline.

The skyline will significantly widen between this the SEG Development central station and Power District.

Don't forget the IHC hospital on the Sears block. That will also extend it southward.

I do think that we are at the precipice of our next boom cycle that will not only impact the downtown area but will stretch across the city.
