This is good news. Some of the locomotives for the branch lines in Connecticut are ancient and are responsible for significant diesel emissions.

New locomotives will soon be in service on Metro-North

By Jim Cameron
November 10, 2024
CT Mirror

"Finally, there’s some good news for Metro-North riders, especially those who take the Danbury, Waterbury and Hartford lines: new locomotives are coming… eventually.

Meet the Siemens Charger model SC-42DM, the first of its kind in the U.S.

Being built in Sacramento CA, these new engines are the latest innovation in the long history of this German manufacturer. It was Siemens that built the first electric tram in the late 1800’s. They even partnered to build one of the first commercial maglev trains, in Shanghai..."

Alongside the congestion pricing start on Dec. 29, Hochul will also add service on dozens of bus routes in the Outer Boroughs.

Seems like a pretty good plan. I would have preferred the original fee, at the original start date, but this will do. They can always raise the rates.

Statistically one in eight of them will get their head cut off in the next two years. Hope it was worth it.

Feds officially signed off on revised congestion pricing.

Cannot wait till this is finally a go on Jan 5.

I wonder if you could cut down on subway surfing by literally oiling/greasing the car roofs.

^ The subway fleet being open gangway would solve much of the problem cuz the kiddos would no longer have the ability to climb up in between cars and onto the roof. They could still hang off the back though which by comparison to walking on the roof of a moving train seems much less dangerous, and if I'm being totally honest looks like a pretty fun rush. That is not an endorsement.

Is traffic in Manhattan as bad as it was before the pandemic?

Actually worse. Cross-town traffic has never been slower (at least since this sort of thing was recorded).

Midtown traffic, esp. around the holidays, or when the UN is in session, is total gridlock. The bridge and tunnel crossings are regularly 90 min.+ It's a joke.

People will complain, but $9 isn't much, when parking is $50. Also, the off-hours rates are much lower. And they're adding transit service concurrent with the congestion charge.

Hey we're making progress! 1994 was 30 years after the magnetic strip cards were introduced in London, and OMNY was only 18 years behind the Oyster card! If we had only waited a couple of more years we could have copied Seoul (first contactless in 1996) and leapfrogged the magnetic strip and avoided many many annoying reswipes!

Not to mention the collective one million tons of discarded metrocards littering the system.

IMHO There's nothing wrong with the Metrocard in the first place. Just cause its "old technology" doesn't mean its not still suitable for the task.

Parking is definitely not $50 for regular commuters. You can easily find early bird rates for $20-30, depending on your garage location.

In my experience, traffic is still somewhat better than it was pre-pandemic. But it seems to be getting worse year by year. The holidays and UN week are always bad, duh.

Speaking of holidays, last year, I was able to find free parking right next to Governor Hochul's favorite diner near Grand Central Terminal right around 7 pm so that we could walk 5 Ave and check out the Saks window and Rockefeller Center. And this was on a Friday night.

Disagree, especially if you're cheap like me and refuse to pay the $1 gouging fee for a new card. For me, the so-called "expiration" date is mindbogglingly far away, and the magnetic strip on my car starts to get scratched within 2-6 months. Every re-swipe slows everyone down during rush hour when every second is precious. If we have a new method that takes the fare perfectly nearly 100% of the time, I'm behind it.
