Bettman is probably having deja-vu flashbacks. Dinner with the owner, breakfast with the Mayor, LRT expansion talks, touring the empty Flats, game in Kanata...

I'm surprised to hear they had 10k season ticket holders at the Civic Centre. I could imagine we reached 16k for a while, until the downfall of the 2010s.

lol there's a typo there. "Secteur des parcs" should be updated to "Secteur des parkings" or

"Secteur des campings" to reflect current realty.

The NCC already handed over a good chunk of the Flats District to Avenue 31 Capital Inc. and Cogir, negotiations ongoing, so I don't think they could hand that over to the Sens. The parcel south of the tracks shown in the image is probably too narrow to fit an arena. Where it's shown on the plan is the only spot where it can fit, unless the parks district is in play (where it was proposed with RVL), but that land would be hard to develop since it's landfill, though not impossible. I think Bruce and the Citizen don't understand the master concept plan and the NCC progress so far.

Plus ça change, plus ça reste pareil.

The NCC and the Sens had that press conference in September, but really didn't explain what that all meant. What extra land was offered to the Sens? Where's that temporary parking going to be? What form will it take? I wonder if they even know, honestly.

Assuming the NCC is holding steady on the Parks District and they need the thickest part of the parcel to accommodate an arena, I think its only two likely candidates. A direct connection to Baysview:

Or they think the narrow sliver closest to Baysview is worthless and shift east towards Pimisi:

I hope its the first one.

Community must rally behind new arena at LeBreton or ‘it doesn’t work,’ Bettman tells crowd

David Sali, OBJ
November 19, 2024

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman says the Senators’ proposed new arena at LeBreton Flats could be “something that revitalizes” Ottawa’s downtown, but adds it will be up to local business and community leaders to decide whether the plan becomes reality.

In an interview with OBJ following a luncheon Tuesday at the National Arts Centre, Bettman said he’s keeping a close eye on negotiations as the Senators try to hammer out a deal to officially purchase 10 acres of land at LeBreton from the National Capital Commission for a new rink.

“The letter of intent is a terrific start, but there’s still a lot of work to do,” he said of the agreement in principle between the Senators and the NCC that was finalized on Sept. 20. “But it seems, especially being here today, that there’s a genuine commitment on behalf of all constituencies to try and move this forward.”

Bettman, who was expected to meet with Mayor Mark Sutcliffe later in the day before attending Tuesday night’s game between the Sens and the visiting Edmonton Oilers, was a guest speaker at the CEO Talks event co-hosted by OBJ and the Ottawa Board of Trade.

He was joined by Senators owner Michael Andlauer and the NHL club’s vice-president of communications Ian Mendes, who moderated the 40-minute chat.

Not surprisingly, the Senators’ arena situation figured prominently during the discussion, which attracted hundreds of local business leaders.

Bettman made it clear he believes the community needs to rally behind Andlauer and his group if it wants a new NHL venue at LeBreton to come to fruition.

“Any new building has to be a community, public-private based endeavour or it doesn’t work,” he said.

“It really starts with understanding what the community wants and what the community needs. And everything I’ve heard from people in the business community, the mayor, is there needs to be something that revitalizes downtown – that’s a magnet to draw people downtown. The Canadian Tire Centre is a perfectly nice arena, and the Senators could play there forever, but it’s not exactly the most central location.”

Bettman pointed to Edmonton’s NHL arena, which opened in 2016 in a newly developed mixed-use district in the city’s core, as an example, calling it “transformative” for the Alberta capital.

He suggested the same thing could happen in the nation’s capital.

The Senators “can stay where they are, or you can do something that really is designed to improve the quality of life in Ottawa,” he told the crowd. “That’s a judgment that this group and the civic leaders and Michael have to make.”

Bettman also noted he experienced firsthand the buzz surrounding Taylor Swift’s series of sold-out concerts at the Rogers Centre in downtown Toronto, which are expected to generate nearly $300 million in economic spinoffs for the region.

“You couldn’t believe what was going on in that city,” said the NHL commissioner, who attended one of Swift’s concerts in Toronto with his granddaughter last Friday. “It wouldn’t have happened if the arena were in Mississauga. It just wouldn’t.”

Following the discussion with Andlauer and Mendes, Bettman reiterated his belief that an arena at LeBreton could be a catalyst for a downtown revival because it would likely attract more major events than the team’s current building in Kanata.

“The team can continue to play in the Canadian Tire Centre, but what do the fans want and what does the business community want? And can this make a difference in revitalizing Ottawa by instead of having 50 or 75 events, having 150 events and people downtown more, shopping, going to restaurants? That’s something the community is going to have to answer,” he told OBJ.

Bettman, who will mark 32 years as the NHL’s top executive next Feb. 1, also praised the Senators’ new owner, saying Andlauer has shown “an incredible commitment, financially, emotionally, to the community and to the team” since he purchased the club in 2023.

The commissioner said he believes the Senators have a bright future ahead.

“On and off the ice, all the vital signs are good.”

As I was passing by on the LRT this morning, I noticed some machinery in the orange (Parks District) area on the map above. Couldn’t get a close enough look to see what they were doing.

Its kind of the perfect size area for at-grade parking of 100's level season ticket holders (or only the Club Bell one-way valet). There's not really space for anything else. Considering the wedge shape is bus lay-by and is FULL of buses at Lebreton events, I don't think OC Transpo would be willing to give that up, considering they currently close the 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 stations and direct passengers to buses after events on the flats...

Also have to factor in a loading dock, player parking, etc. There's a big area at the current arena to the west (approximately 1/4 the total footprint of the arena). Could all this go underneath the arena? Also I'm assuming the rink slab is near to, or above grade, and concourse levels would have a layer of at least one parking deck beneath. This would be a bit taller than usual, don't most arenas bury their rink slabs a bit below grade to help out with vertical travel of fans?

Similar to Toronto, all of the new condos in the flats would have large parking garages, to pay for the condo upkeep and to allow parking for games and events. I'm sure tay-tay parkings were $100 or more. I just hope it doesn't become a mess to drive into, like at Lansdowne. Hire some actual parking designers.

NHL commissioner says new downtown Ottawa arena could 'breed a whole economy'
Gary Bettman pitches financial spinoffs to politicians, businesses, residents

Emma Weller · CBC News

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman toured Ottawa on Tuesday to promote the work being done on a downtown arena.

The development plan has been off-and-on for years, with the latest step an "agreement in principle" in September between the Ottawa Senators and National Capital Commission that would see the Sens-led Capital Sports Development Inc. purchase a plot of land at LeBreton Flats.

it would facilitate a move from the team's Kanata home about 23 kilometres from Parliament Hill to one about two kilometres away.

The specifics around parking haven't been announced, but the site is a few hundred metres from the meeting of the Trillium and Confederation rail lines at Bayview station. It's also closer to the bridges between Ottawa and Gatineau.

Bettman said he's optimistic of the economic boom the new arena could bring because the stadium would be more central and could possibly bring in more events.

"So instead of having 75 events [a year], if there are 150, that breeds a whole economy [including] shopping, restaurants [and] bars around the arena or in walking distance of the arena," Bettman said.

"I mean, just take a look at what the economies of Taylor Swift concerts do to the places they go."

One tourism agency's estimate is Swift's Eras Tour is leading to as much as $282 million in economic activity in Toronto, though it's worth noting the stadium tour isn't going anywhere with a capacity under 40,000 people.

There's also the counter-argument that people move disposable income around when new attractions come rather than decide to start spending more money, and the example close to home of a new sports-and-business development underperforming.

Amidst Bettman's optimism, he warns this deal won't happen overnight.

"There are a lot of things that have to come together that make this work and nobody, again, should jump ahead and presume that it requires any one additional thing," he emphasized.

Bettman said that includes the design, where exactly on the property the arena will be located and the big question of who is going to pay for this estimated $1-billion project.

"People are going to speculate
What does it mean to taxpayers? Don't go there yet. There are too many things that have to come together before anybody should draw any conclusions whatsoever," he said.

Bettman outlined the importance of a public and private partnerships and attended an Ottawa Board of Trade meeting to discuss the project with hundreds of members of the city's business community.

Along his tour of Ottawa, Bettman and other NHL officials walked LeBreton Flats, visited Mayor Mark Sutcliffe at city hall and was at the Canadian Tire Centre for Ottawa's 5-2 loss to Edmonton.

In a statement to CBC, Sutcliffe said he and the officials had "a good discussion" about the Senators and the future of hockey in Ottawa and received an update on the agreement with the NCC.

OC lost that space when the train opened. They use it with permission for major events for now, but not for any regular operations.

Interesting to know.

Was there ever a plan to right-size that stretch of Albert, similar to the rest of Scott? Or will it remain six lanes?

I suppose for future games, buses can line up on Kichisibi, and Albert.

Just calculating potential parking spaces along the Line 1 and 2, this could be a boon for SEVERAL large institutions. Carleton, Canada Post, South Keys (and then onwards to regular park n rides south). And then all points east and west where people will drive, park and train into the arena. This would operate similar to RedBlacks games, but without the plethora of school buses. Theoretically, it's great for hubs. The spokes will make or break the lines.

Also hoping for the Bayview Triangle so we only need to find one more developer to finish the Albert District. This would also give the Sens one direct access to an O-Train Station. I was really hoping they'd get the entire site between Albert and the tracks.

I have to imagine that is what they are asking for. I think a continuous development between the arena and both stations would ensure some kind of covered/indoor link. I have stayed at the Delta in downtown Toronto a few times and it's amazing how you can get just about anywhere downtown using various above and below ground pedestrian links. This is Canada after all....

Would have been cool to have an indoor climate control link between the two stations that join within the concourse. Windows to the O-Train, park and Ottawa River all along.

Preston is also a better street than Booth to connect the arena and "district" (if it materializes) to the urban fabric.

One wonders what dollar figure he has in mind when he says the community must rally behind the proponents?
