Looks a lot more desolate without the parked cars at the curb (due to construction lane changes),
and Broadway isn't known for many trees along this stretch either.

The RC Starbucks is now open, and has seating inside from the pic I saw on reddit.

There's the VGH flight path so limited to around 130 feet/40m

I wonder if they build a new VGH tower if sticking a heliport on the roof of a tower is doable or not.

I don't think any of the planned additions to VGH are towers. It would presumably have to be above a new Emergency department, but I don't think there are any plans in to replace the existing one.

New buildings at VGH were being added every few years, but that momentum seems to have been lost. I guess investing in Women's and Children's, and St Paul's has taken the available funds.

It's also across the street from the abandoned Fairview pub and old hotel that is getting replaced. Once that is done with the new Skytrain station close by, the pressure will increase to redevelop this side of the street IMO. The Tim Hortons is pretty busy FWIW.

I think there are plans to build a new ER for VGH, but it would generally be in the same era and I can't see any new helipad (if they move it) being any higher than the current one.

LGH, Richmond, and Burnaby are all in some stage of new buildings and renovations. Then there's a new hospital in Surrey.

VGH is currently replacing the second half of their ORs (another 16 for 32 new total).

I was just thinking of a Centennial Hospital replacement with some connection to the existing emergency rooms (not sure how it's currently being used). They could buy all the land in front of the helicopter flight path and make money on the increased density.

There's two Hotel proposals for the corner right up that street there across the intersection from one another, and right next the new skytrain station.

And I imagine the lots next door to the new hotels themselves will also eventually get redeveloped - maybe not with highrises on account of that location's proximity to VGH as others have noted, but the standard issue 18-20 storey mixed use rental building, with commercial retail at grade.

Reddit said Metrotown might be open by November. They're hiring for cooks now (the West Broadway location is already hiring as well).

I think they were being overly optimistic.
That Metrotown location doesn't look like it's opening any time soon.
It's been boarded up in the same way for the last 3 years and looks no different now with November having only a little over a week left to go.

I passed by the mall not to long ago and there seemed to be lights on underneath the door, but that's not really indicative of anything.

I'd be curious to see how they operate the street facing side, (i.e. Kingsway side).
The restaurant that was there before did have a streetside entrance and exit that allowed them to operate after mall operating hours and after the mall had closed. I have to think that that was one of the draws for them in opening a restaurant in that location

It's funny that this topic regarding new towers being built in the VGH vicinity and neighbourhood came up, and then a story like this pops up about a rental tower proposal for a few blocks away from VGH.

It's only 20 storey's (boilerplate 'Broadway Plan' height and density), but still....

(This is almost certainly off-topic, so mods feel free to move it if necessary, but it felt pertinent to the discussion at hand):-

Nearly 300 rental homes proposed near future Oak-VGH SkyTrain station

You're correct, increasingly off topic. At least that Broadway Plan tower on W12th has retail on the main floor, that could be a restaurant. (That's the lane elevation in the image).

There are already 7 towers proposed under the Broadway Plan within a block or two of VGH. All of them are to the south, or west. The helicopter approach path that limits building heights is a fan shape to the north.

The Popeye's Chicken at Metrotown has finally opened after some 4-5 years behind the boarded up storefront.

It seems like they will be operating even after Mall hours up to midnight with their Kingsway-side entrance providing access after the mall closes.
I imagine this also anticipates SkipTheDishes/DoorDash/UberEats late night orders which would be collected from that side like with the McDonald's at the other side of the mall. They might even operate the food delivery service all night like McDonald's does.

It still feels like a weird location, being right next to the Bay and the Food Court a whole leve above, but I guess if you want to eat at the food court you can order there and take your meal up the escalator to the food court eating area.

They do have a dining area with quite a number of several seating spaces - albeit kinda claustrophobic with the narrow space they're working with, but like I said, they right beside the escalator going upstairs to several seating spaces of the food court proper.

I used to go to Paris Baguette in Seoul when I first moved there. It was close to my apartment, and I didn't know where else to go.

It's a super average coffee and cake chain that does well simply due to the fact that they are absolutely everywhere in South Korea. I wonder how it'll fair in Vancouver after the initial curiosity wears off. In my opinion, Tim Hortons is way better, as crazy as that sounds.
