Freddy North and the 2 SJ Walmarts are probably on the radar to get fully upgraded to modern SuperCenter standards within the next few years too.
The west side SJ Walmart renovated 2 years ago. And it can’t become a Supercenter because of No Frills being in the same shopping complex. Plus it’s only 102,000 square feet with no room to expand.

However the east side Supercenter store needs an upgrade into a true Supercenter store. Hopefully soon it will renovate.

Apparently there will be a delay of about two weeks for everything to be finished. The first feature to be shown in the refurbished IMAX theatre will actually be a non-IMAX film - Mlle Bottine (en francais), which will premiere on November 29th.

There are IMAX movies coming out during the holiday season in December.

Hopefully Cineplex will also do a refurbishment on their other cinema complex in Wheeler Park..........
Nothing is listed on Cineplex.com for future Imax movies. Wonder if there's been a delay?

I guess they don't want to overpromise?

The 22nd is only 8 days away. At present the only feature listed for that date at Cineplex Dieppe (at least on their app) is Wicked in the AVX auditorium. Nothing else listed at all for the IMAX, or, for the conventional auditoriums.

Doesn't sound good for Stokes stores here in Atlantic Canada, including Moncton and Fredericton. Seems like they are only keeping stores in Ontario and Québec.

"During the CCAA proceedings, Stokes will be seeking the Court’s authorization to close its less profitable stores while maintaining its profitable retail locations in Québec and Ontario and its head office operations in Montréal, Québec. Once the restructuring is completed, Stokes expects to continue to employ approximately 500 Canadians.”

https://retail-insider.com/retail-inside...es-restructuring-to-reposition-business/

UPDATE: CCAA proceedings documents confirm only 50 stores will remain in Quebec and Ontario: https://documentcentre.ey.com/api/Document/download?docId=40778&language=EN

Very sad news. Stokes was a nice resource for kitchenware and small appliances.

The Champlain Place store will close in January.

Just found out on Halifax ReTales (chat) that the Bayers Lake location of Toys R Us is closing in January.

Is there trouble in toyland???

The Bayers Lake location was relatively new (about 18 months or so old), and was not purpose built (reconverted former retail space - a Best Buy if I recall correctly).

The main TRU in HRM is in Dartmouth Crossing. I am pretty sure this overshadowed the new Bayers Lake location, and, it never really caught on.

Still, is this a warning sign????

I have heard that TRU is considering closing "underperforming locations." There are probably several other Atlantic Canadian locations that might fit in this category (although probably not the Champlain Place location), but, if TRU was to consider considerable shrinkage in their footprint, could this herald the future demise of the whole chain (like in the US)???

The decision earlier this year to establish store-in-store HMV locations within TRU stores I found to be peculiar, especialy in malls like Champlain Place with pre-existing Sunrise Record locations. This smacked of a cheap way to fill up underperforming space. The news that some stores are now closing makes me concerned.........

Glicked weekend is coming up. It will be Barbenheimer all over again!

I just checked the Cineplex app on my phone for showtimes this Friday.

The listings for both theatres are still incomplete for the weekend, but, I found it interesting that Wheeler Park had listings for both Gladiator 2 and Wicked posted, but, that the Dieppe Cineplex only had listings for Wicked (in the Super AVX cinema), and not Gladiator 2.

I am assuming they are still working furiously away with the intent to show Gladiator 2 in Dieppe at the new IMAX.

Will they succeed? Will they win the race?? Will the IMAX in the Dieppe Cineplex be open this weekend???

One thing I find odd about Cineplex in Moncton is they have zero social media presence. In todays world this seems like a terrible decision. People shouldnt be finding out about an IMAX upgrade through niche message boards and social media group pages.

Is this a corporate policy of some sort (they have a national cineplex page) or just laziness by the owner?

If they had a social media page they could easily communicate about the delays related to the IMAX and set some expectations. I'm sure the majority of movie goers in Moncton & Dieppe have no idea this is even happening.

Stock is apparently now being delivered to the new Rona store in Mapleton Crossing. Opening will be very soon. Still no signage on the building.

I have been giving the status of Mapleton Crossing some thought recently.

Initially (about eight years ago), Cordova (now Thrive) had grand plans for Mapleton Crossing, even including a second phase of the development on the other side of Mapleton Road. This was to include a relocated Costco store.

This all fell apart when Costco chose to relocate their store to the Granite Centre instead, and, also with the subsequent sale of the Cabela's chain to Bass Pro Shop. Moncton was one of the very few cities in North America with both a Cabela's and a BPS. The decision was made to relocate and consolidate operations in the larger BPS at Champlain Place.

Thrive then decided to sell off their lands on the east side of Mapleton to Irving, and also decided to turn their remaining holdings in the original Mapleton Crossing phase (on the west side) over to residential development instead. The idea of "Mapleton Crossing" as a power centre was dead.

Since then, Thrive has significantly cut back on their residential development ambitions, and, have put their remaining lands in Mapleton Crossing up for sale. At the same time, Irving has relocated their main Wheeler Park Kent location to the (former phase two of Mapleton Crossing) on Mapleton Road, with plans to develop additional adjacent retail.

Finally, Rona has swept in to purchase the former Cabela's in Mapleton Crossing with plans to open a new home improvement store. This move gives the former phase one of Mapleton Crossing a decent footprint with Rona, Princess Auto and an Ultramar

So, we now have a nacent retail node developing in the Mapleton Crossing area anyway. This is anchored by Kent, Rona and Princess Auto. Given this, maybe the lands in phase one that Thrive had been planning on converting to residential should instead remain commercial (as originally intended). Irving plans on more commercial/retail development on their side of the street anyway, and Mapleton Crossing is ideally situated next to the TCH on one of the principal entries into the city. There are already three hotels in the immediate neighbourhood, with a fourth hotel planned. In terms of pure logistics, Mapleton Crossing has more robust underpinnings than the Granite Centre does.

Maybe the destiny of this property should be commercial/retail after all.

Thoughts?

Rona signage being installed today:

The character of the old Cabela's building remains preserved.

From Retail Insider:

Urban Barn expands across Canada with new Halifax store
By Craig Patterson
Date: November 18, 2024
https://retail-insider.com/retail-inside...ds-across-canada-with-new-halifax-store/

Quote:
Urban Barn’s expansion into Halifax, set for spring 2025, will further solidify its status as a national brand. The Halifax store will offer a large-format retail experience, enhancing Urban Barn’s capacity to serve the local market. The new location will also facilitate greater e-commerce capabilities, as the retailer will now have a regional presence to support logistics and delivery for larger furniture pieces.

Fincham highlighted that opening in Halifax is part of a broader strategy to expand in Eastern Canada. “We won’t make a market entry with just one location. We’re exploring additional opportunities in the East and Ontario as we continue to grow.”
So, they are essentially telegraphing that they anticipate new store openings in the future within Atlantic Canada. This only makes sense in terms of logistics and supply chain management.

Obviously, if they anticipate future store openings, Moncton would be a prime location to consider, especially since whatever trucks they send down here to supply the Halifax store will pass right by Moncton. The question is where?

I see two or three prime possibilities.

1) - Petitcodiac Plaza in Dieppe. Right across the street from Champlain Place in a busy retail neighbourhood. There is room to extend the plaza to the east with one more large CRU certainly big enough for an Urban Barn. Plaza Corp already has let it be known they want to expand the plaza to it's full capacity, This is the most likely location.
2) - Granite Centre. They have lots of room to expand, and need to move more into the realm of big box stores to sustain future growth. Up until now, they have been relying on Costco and a series of strip malls with small CRUs. They can't keep on doing this. They need to think bigger.
3) - Mapleton Crossing. See my post further up the page. I think it is time Mapleton Crossing got back into the commercial/retail game. There are 2-3 potential pad sites off of Cabela's Court big enough for an Urban Barn. Urban Barn would fit in quite nicely with Rona and Kent as neighbours.

This quote is encouraging, especially given the liguistic dynamic of greater Moncton:

Quote:
Urban Barn entered the Quebec market in 2015 and now operates five stores in the province. The retailer’s success in Quebec is supported by a commitment to respecting local culture and providing French-language services. This thoughtful approach to market integration demonstrates Urban Barn’s dedication to community engagement across Canada.

“Our French translation team and community support efforts show that we’re dedicated to immersing ourselves in each market we enter,” said Fincham. “Being part of the local community is essential to us.”
Quote:
As of 2024, Urban Barn operates 54 stores from British Columbia to Quebec, employing more than 650 team members. The retailer says it remains committed to offering thoughtfully designed furniture and home décor that resonate with Canadians’ diverse lifestyles and tastes.
The second quote indicates they now have 54 stores across Canada. Halifax will be #55. I've said it before - once a chain reaches the 50 store threshold, Moncton becomes an obvious choice for expansion. I am highly optimistic that given the tenor of this article, that we will likely see an Urban Barn in Moncton in the next couple of years.

Jimmy John’s Opens in Canada with Plans for 200 Locations
By Craig Patterson
Date: November 18, 2024
https://retail-insider.com/retail-inside...-in-canada-with-plans-for-200-locations/

Quote:
Jimmy John’s has plans for rapid growth under Canadian master franchisor Foodtastic, which aims to open 200 locations across Canada within the next decade. Peter Mammas, President and CEO of Foodtastic, shared insights on their strategy to win over Canadian customers and adapt the brand for local tastes.
Quote:
Foodtastic’s expansion plan starts with a focus on Ontario, with Toronto as the launchpad. The company’s clustering strategy aims to create a concentrated market presence, building brand awareness and streamlining logistics. “Our approach is strategic,” Mammas emphasized. “We’re clustering several locations within key markets to ensure consistent supply chains and strong brand recognition.”
Quote:
Founded in 1983 by Jimmy John Liautaud in Champaign, Illinois, Jimmy John’s began as a small sandwich shop, pivoting from its original hot dog stand concept due to cost constraints. Over the past four decades, the brand has grown to over 2,700 locations, with the majority operating as franchises. Known for its freshly baked bread, premium ingredients, and “freaky fast” service, Jimmy John’s has become a household name across the United States. Acquired by Inspire Brands in 2019, Jimmy John’s continues to evolve and expand its offerings, including limited-time menu items and new sandwich innovations, while maintaining its commitment to quality and speed.
So, the master franchisor in Canada will be Foodtastic. This company knows metro Moncton very well, with a number of their brands already well established in the community, including Pita Pit. Milestones, Second Cup, Quesada, and recently, Noodle Box.

With plans for 200 locations nationwide, it is a no brainer that they will eventually end up in the hub city. This however will likely not be for some time, as they intend to concentrate on Toronto and southern Ontario first, no doubt looking out west next, then finally Quebec and Atlantic Canada. I think 5-7 years at best.

Jimmy John's will be a direct competitor for Firehouse Subs. Moncton got a Firehouse fairly early on in the game (first in Atlantic Canada). Maybe Jimmy John's will be the same........
