Louis Vuitton 57th Street, which opens to the public on Friday, boasts a restaurant, chocolate shop and towering stacks of trunks to rival the Manhattan skyline.

.....Upon entering the store, there’s a display of hand-painted trunks inspired by the Empire State Building. Just ahead is the atrium with the soaring trunk towers.

From category to category, there’s an open flow, with the first floor merchandised with leathers, gifts, fragrance, travel, jewelry and a capsule collection of New York City-inspired leather goods, men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, shoes and gifts exclusive to the store. Options include Neverfull Inside Out totes in taxicab yellow, a Capucines decorated with skyscrapers, and bag charms or Slender wallets in the form of a New York license plate that reads “LV since 1854,” the year the maison was founded. There is also an area for hot stamping and hand-painting on hard-sided pieces.

That’s one reason it signed a seven-year lease to lease the 65,000-square-foot former Nike spot at 6 E. 57th St., which its own Tiffany’s brand is vacating right now as it moves back into its redeveloped flagship at The Landmark at 727 Fifth Ave.

It would be nice if we got to see some designs. I'm not expecting great height here, though we could get it. But I would like to see a design that stands out on that intersection.

Fifth Ave. & 57th Street is the most important retail crossroads on earth.

I really hope we get something stunning. The seven-year lease on the temp flagship strongly suggests this will be a major landmark tower.

I think they will. Wasn’t the LVMH building in Beverly Hills supposed to have condos and a hotel?

I assume that churches and synagogues still have air rights to sell if LVMH wants to make this taller. I wonder how tall it can get.

P.S.: The “sculpture” to the right reminds me of Calatrava’s design for 80 South Street.

I’d be shocked if Prada does not develop condos, a hotel, and a new store on this site. I can’t see how it spent over $800m on this site for merely a store consisting of one schlocky building and one formerly nice (now butchered) building.
