By Don Rice
Published Oct 08, 2024
Saskatoon Star Phoenix

Businesses and non-profit organizations regularly open and move in Saskatoon. Today the StarPhoenix talks to Fred Martens, who together with Arnold Mendoza, opened Fiesta Tacos & Tequila downtown in July.

Fred has worked in restaurants for years while Arnold has been cooking for years, having developed a Birria taco recipe that led the two to partner together in this restaurant. The pair, along with manager Chelcea Stagman, spent over four months of their own time renovating the former Italian restaurant into the casual and fun dining atmosphere it is today. They believe they bring the ‘Wow factor’ to the Birria taco and all the other tacos and items on their menu.

By Don Rice
Oct 22, 2024
Saskatoon Star Phoenix

Businesses and non-profit organizations regularly open and move in Saskatoon. Today the StarPhoenix talks to Que Vu who recently opened a second location for Restaurant 224 with her husband Vu Nguyen in the University Heights area of Saskatoon.

Joining the interview was restaurant manager Bradley Dao, who helped with translating portions of the interview.

Que and her husband Vu originally opened the first Restaurant 224 in downtown Saskatoon in 2018. Both grew up in Vietnam and they primarily serve a large variety of Vietnamese food, as well as dishes from other cultures.

They had many requests to open additional locations and decided on University Heights as the spot for their second operation. They love to help people, and for the fourth year in a row this year provided free noodle bowls to people in need on Thanksgiving.

Bistro on B fires up the grill for new twist on smokehouse classics

By Naomi Hansen
CBC News
Nov 05, 2024

It's been a winding road into the restaurant world for Cayle Anderson, who started off as a plumber before launching a meal prep business that's turned into one of Saskatoon's newest restaurants.

"I've always been into smoking, just kind of cooking at home for my girlfriend," said Anderson. "So home cooking is how I learned how to cook, but now it's come to real life."

He is the owner of Bistro on B — named after its location at 312 Ave. B S. in Riversdale. He describes the restaurant's offering as Tex-Mex cuisine with a French bistro feel.

Mountain Warehouse is coming to Midtown, as per the mall's website:

https://shopmidtown.ca/stores/mountain-warehouse

They've been working on finishing this renovated Sears area on the corner of 1st & 20th, beside H&M since the summer. Interesting to see if the store will have street entry/activation. Doubtful due to the increased risk of theft, but better windows than painted plywood!

It's not much, but it's nice to see the appeal of this intersection improved somewhat with the streetscaping on 20th St that the City just installed, the fantastic murals on the end of the 1st Ave parkade, and a friendlier face for this corner of Midtown via some windows.

Saskatoon’s Midtown shopping centre experiences strong year of leasing activity

By Mario Toneguzzi
December 9, 2024
Retail Insider

The Midtown shopping centre in Saskatoon has had an incredibly successful year in 2024, opening eight new stores, including two first-to-market (first in the province) retailers.

Sales are projected to hit $191 million by the end of December, a $5-million increase from 2023.

From outerwear to beauty products to dining options and more, Midtown has seen substantial growth in retailers throughout 2024.

In the final quarter of the year alone, the shopping centre has welcomed eight new retailers into its roster, including the first-to-market Levi’s store and highly anticipated Mountain Warehouse — the largest location the brand has opened outside of the United Kingdom.
