We can keep the palms but plant shade trees between them? Everyone wins?

I will always support more plants and trees of any kind but If I have to chose to lose palms in order to gain Leafy trees I will take that.

Nothing very new, but a good recap of the current state of play for the street car extension to Sloan Park.

Yes, it passed decisively. That's good news. On the other hand, Trump's return to the White House and Republican control of the Senate may jeopardize federal funding for transit projects. Also, Mark Freeman has a lead over Scott Smith in the Mesa mayoral election. If he wins, it's less likely the Tempe Streetcar will be extended to Riverview and the Asian District. It will be interesting to what the result is when all those factors come into play.

Hasnt it pretty handily passed every year for a couple decades?

More like every 20 years. The last countywide transportation tax vote was in 2004. There was a lot more organized opposition back then. This year, opponents were focused elsewhere on a crowded ballot. Also, because the legislature neutered so much of what went into this version, the opposition was able to accomplish many of its goals before the measure even went before the voters.

Yeah if I’m not mistaken, Buttigieg is a strong supporter of public transit and his personal pet project seemed to be trying to get support for nationwide high speed rail off the ground. That’s likely dead now. Not that I don’t think Trump could be persuaded, but I don’t think he’ll be surrounded by anyone who would attempt to persuade him in favor of transit in the first place.

Agreed. Elaine Chao, Buttigieg's predecessor at DOT during Trump 1.0 wasn't great, but she also wasn't into 15-minute-city Agenda 21 conspiracy theories. The Project 2025 people likely to be involved in a Trump 2.0 Administration probably will be.

I wish this was the case with having The Project 2025 intelligence involved but the transition team is full of Goldman Sachs shills....

Trump absolutely doesn't care one way or another about public transit. He likes Infrastructure and he likes things that are popular, if you get somebody in his ear that can talk about the benefits of public transport to him the funding will flow.

The people he has involved with his cabinet this time are probably going to be very different from 1.0 so it will be interesting to see where something like DOT falls. He has always had a big hardon for wanting to update airports etc it would be pretty easy to get funding for public transit wrapped up with general transportation funding. Planes Trains and Automobiles.

Republicans will never support light rail, unless it is for political theater. Usually already approved projects by other administrations. Instead I would guess boring company and Tesla taxis will get massive subsidies. Trump campaigned on keeping suburbs free of apartments and density ruining the character of their neighborhoods.

Politics is theater.

Why politicians support what they support is irrelevant what matters is if they do things you want them to do.

Time to look at politics as they really are

Discussing the results of an election is plenty on topic for this thread so long as you all are civil and it doesn't obstruct real news.

Yes, I don't know how this conversation could be apolitical when both local taxes and federal funds are involved. So far, everyone's being polite and staying on topic.
