Crane appears to drop load in Vancouver, triggering investigation

WorkSafeBC is investigating after a troubling incident involving a construction crane in Vancouver.

Police and the work safety watchdog were called to a job site on East Hastings Street near Glen Drive where the crane reportedly dropped a load.

Video from the scene showed the main line of the crane dangling loosely, and the point at which it appears to have failed.

The images after the incident showed the cable that was being used to lift a steel beam had apparently snapped, with the remaining ends frayed. If it failed during a lift without any other factors affecting the situation, the operator's experience wouldn't seem to be relevant. Whether it was rated correctly for the weight being lifted might be, I would guess?

There have been a lot of incidents, and while there are lots of new people on construction sites now, with many newly arrived immigrants from India and Mexico, they are very inexperienced, so that is definitely a factor.

Not the crane operator's fault. The rigger on the ground is responsible for rigging that load up safely. Pretty simple formula though. The slings are rated for a certain weight, and you should know what the weight of the load is. I'm not a rigger, but there is probly a safety factor of 4 or something like that, where if the slings are rated for 5000 pounds, your weight limit is 1250. Maybe that safety protocol wasn't followed. If the load shifts or jumps, you put a shock force many times the weight of the load on the slings.

I talked to another crane operator about another load that fell to the ground recently, and the rigger made the mistake of using chains to rig up a steel beams (or something steel). The chains were spread apart at 2 points to pull the load up, but since it's metal on metal, the chains slid inwards towards each other, and the load fell. Bad mistake by the rigger.

It looks like they plan to retain the heritage facade of the apartment building, which is already compromised in value, and move the house to the west? It's good to respect the historic character of the area.

Architect is Henriquez Partners so this should be a good looking building, that low res render looks promising.
12 stories with 97,000 sqft total.

Good looking proposal and needed to keep these 2 buildings in a good little historic cluster in North Mt Pleasant. I wish the project didn't overwhelm the brick facade quite so much, but it should look great from street level.

I think this project has been mentioned before, soon after it was submitted in June? If it goes ahead, and the house is moved, it's probably not the first time it's happened. It's the earliest building still standing in Mount Pleasant, but it was initially on the lot where the apartment building now sits, and was moved across by James Smith, who developed the apartment building. More details here on Changing Vancouver..

Interesting proposal to keep the house and the apartment façade. Curious what the end product actually looks like though.

I like having those old houses converted to retail space, so I hope that’s the plan here.

I love the heritage retention. Those old houses have so much potential to be unique restaurants, clubs, bars, etc.

Heather Lands by GBL. Looks nice though I wonder if people are going to have a hissy fit over the massing.
