When I was at Hudson's Bay Polo Park last, the exits on the upper (2nd) floor were converted to Emergency Exits for loss prevention.

Famous Footwear is already closed and is moving next to Champs and The Bay. Journey's and Laura close on Saturday. Journey's is not returning to the mall.

Tokyo Smoke as a whole is operationally in trouble and the moment and trying to save the company. They are currently under creditor protection, closing 29 stores and are in the process to sell off assets and basically sink irrecoverable debt with the current company. Not a surprise to see the Polo start get snuffed out. Sort of wonder if it was CF that maybe pulled the plug on this one.

It's a bad time to be a cannabis retailer. The market is saturated and lower retail prices still can't compete with the black market. A CRU in the new apt building on Des Meurons has had a "coming soon" sign for a cannabis and vape store for months now. It ain't gonna happen. Like we need another pot shop anyway...

I had an owner of a cannabis store tell me that they needed to pay in full for an order months in advance, aka even before the product entered production. It is a very sizable amount of capital that would be tied up in current and future inventory. It is not easily confirmed from other sources but they also had no reason to tell me what information they did so it seems likely true as well. It was more a complaint about how the industry is running.

There is huge competition with traditional suppliers. You can get an ounce for under $100. That's really cheap and still decent quality. Maybe there is competition with the online black market side of things (ie: ordering from out of Province).

I know people who begrudge going to the store because Trudeaus government is controlling it (you can guess who this crowd is).

The 815 Ellice Ave 7-11 near my house is now shuttered. I still don’t buy the theft issue being any more than 40% of the actual reason (the rest being market forces and a declining business model).

But that aside, that makes Bunty’s the only corner left that isn’t a vacant property. I am hoping someone takes the initiative and picks up one or more of the corner lots for a HAF funded multifamily housing dev. Hard to imagine much else opening in any of these spots except for knockoff businesses like QwikEMart or a 204 Fuels, though Bunty’s is putting in gas pumps next summer themselves.

don't forget the st mary's rd. and traverse location that closed last month! i think this is more of 7/11 cutting costs/slimming down so it's a better financial asset to be sold to couche tard. it wreaks of starbucks' playbook of blaming closures on everything but its faltering profits and stale business model.

I think everyone needs to remember that 7-11 is undergoing a massive closure spree across Canada, from what I understand. Market conditions have changed and Canadians do not see convenience stores in the same way as the Yankees do. People in the US appear far more reliant on using convenience stores for necessities compares to Canadians. I have only ever used Sev for junk food myself. For proper nutritional foods, I go to supermarkets or farmers markets. Always have, always will.

I am sad they feel it is necessary to close so many.
On the other hand, I never patronise them TBH.
I never feel the need but glad they are there for those who need them and/or should I ever need to go there for something urgently.
I also agree with some on here I think the appeal is fading plus everything is frightfully more expensive than everything is already out of reach at regular grocery stores.

Yep I have lived 2 blocks from the Ellice location for 10 years and have stepped foot in there maybe 4 times. I am 38 if the demographic info is useful. With less people smoking and lotto being available online, I assume that alone has eaten up a huge piece of their market.

More commercial but couldn't find the right tab - I had no idea so much money was produced in Winnipeg. Nothing crazy on its own with 40 jobs at the new plant but this is a great example of exactly what Winnipeg needs, more private industry growth to grow the tax base.

Yup fantastic to see this in Winnipeg. More "Made in MB" or even "Made in Canada" products will only help our economy, we as a country need to seriously reduce offshore products. The pandemic proved what that does to our supply chain

Reshoring and friendshoring is vital as the world moves back into multipolarity. I would love to see Manitoba exploit that and start doing everything it can to get Canadian industry and friendly country industry moving in. How to go about that is up for debate but man it would be nice to see the Feds some of those tens of billions for a few factories in the Golden Horseshoe to other parts of the country.

Straight up 7/11 is closing locations because of TCO (total cost of operations). Revenue is down, product and labor costs are up, some newer locations are seeing rising lease costs, they announced they want to shift to a model that includes fuel and older locations do not support that, and yes theft.

Add in that they are openly an acquisition target at the moment.

Sure theft may be part of the issue but it is not the whole issue. They have long done store closures locally so this is really nothing new.

With the higher number closing all at once though I am concerned Winnipeg is going to lose its "Slurpee Capital" title though.
