Definitely not me.
And in Vancouver even less so but forgetting that the view comes and height restrictions are only for Vancouver proper.
I can see Surrey doing this as well.

The podium in the calgary proposal looks great. Nice architectural details and parkette/plaza space for breathing room.

Interesting to see Manulife REIT propose a midtown highrise around a meter taller than Manulife Centre

Proposal at 1047 Richmond in Ottawa, across the street from a new O-Train station set to open in 2027 (new new, not Transitway conversion).

36 and 38 floors, first tower will be 423 units with nearly 500 square meters of retail.











It replaces a glassier, classier design that may have fallen victim to high interest rates, or just standard Ottawafication.

I knew this proposal was floating around for a long time but crazy it's been 8 years just to get to planning approval. Curious, does it still include the additional train station? That was a point of contention with the city iirc as the cost estimates were unrealistic.

Looks like it will be replacing all of the office and retail buildings on Fisher Street. Wonder if these towers will include any offices? Certainly no warehouse space it seems. It's a significant chunk including a Canada Post depot.

Looks like an Ontario transit oriented community with extreme built forms (of note the ten storey podiums) for packing people in a suburban wasteland beside a transit line. Few streets. Few future consideration to connect to the surrounding properties. Giant blocks of housing with some ground tuck shops.

The height and population gurus will love this.

The "East Village" has really stalled in recent years, and that's an urban renewal project that is right downtown, walking distance to lots of amenities, so I don't know how a large project like that could possibly work in the middle of nowhere. Plus you're competing with a huge mall that will suck all the retail life out of the planned high street.

The closest Vancouver comparable is Brentwood, which is located at Willingdon and Lougheed, with lots of industrial, but Brentwood Mall itself is being redeveloped, along with the entire area (2 sq km's), so it won't be so isolating for residents. And home buyers here are far more willing to buy into a tower neighbourhood like this. Not so much in Calgary, as we see with the East Village.

Development of this area in Calgary should start with the Chinook Mall parking lots, then work your way out from there. The City of Calgary should have a larger master plan for this area. This project looks like a huge mistake.

Pictures of Calgary show that the city has a very deep layer of Waterloo-style CanCon submediocrity, but somehow it just muscled through all that and in the end doesn't leave that impression at all. It's kind of inspiring.

East Village has really stalled. Some people claim it's because of the Drop In Centre but the last major tower to be built there was right across the street from it, whereas the undeveloped lots are further away in the centre. There are a lot of homeless people around Chinook Centre too. I went to pick up an item at a grocery store across from the lrt station and there was a group of homeless people hanging in front of the Circle K smoking crack. As we were leaving we passed by a closed garden centre and it looked like skidrow with all of the strung out junkies passed out against the wall.

As far as redeveloping the area there actually is a development plan for the area going from the train to the mall. Right now it's all big box and stripmall stores. It's become a rough area recently though. Cadillac Fairview has a now dormant plan to develop remaining surface parking into condo towers but that has been on hold for about a decade it seems. That would be in direct competition to these plans south of Macleod. Without the added train station that area won't support a car free lifestyle as Macleod Trail is so hostile to pedestrians. Across the street Kingsland is beginning to see 5 story condos be built right behind the CO-OP gas station so I guess the evolution is already starting.

That stuff is all filler leading up to more striking signature towers. Calgary is the land of twins, triplets and quadruplets though.

The arterials have grassy medians too. Reminds me of MCC/Square One area

1950 Scott near Westboro Station (old Transitway station being converted to rail). 141 units, retail, 5 podium townhomes. Not a stand out, but not the worse building on the street.
