The backlash against the NDP's promise to allow pets in purpose-built rentals was totally foreseen.

It's a total slippery slope that will turnoff landlords for voting for them. I have had a pet owner cause nearly 3k in damages to my apartment. Never again.

Could you imagine building a Skytrain line behind people's houses and down a laneway nowadays?

What the Mayor's Council approves or disapproves of isn't always right. Remember when they approved the Surrey LRT?
I remember that they approved the LRT, but I don't recall the business case for yoinking it. I personally didn't get into the details why the Langley line was a good business case. I just personally don't know how I feel about planning routes, having prep-geo work done, a business case, and then just go an do a completely different route that has zero plan.

Reminds me of Calgary.

EDIT: Holy cow but was the original Expo segment really almost $2.1 billion in 2024 dollars!?

Agreed and even though this is purpose-built at the moment, independent or small-time landlords will read this as an affront to them and that the rules are being changed on them today.

They just announced it today, how we know theres a backlash? I see mostly positive opinions on it, even 2 conservatives (including one candidate who I'm friends with) told me in DM that they agree with it.

Not everyone agrees with being forced what to do by the government what they can decide to do with their property.

Making people allow pets is so stupid, but the pro-pet crowd is really strong and unhinged so they'll like this

Hows it stupid? It's been the case in Ontario for YEARS and no one seems to have an issue with it there.

In an election where the NDP needs to convince centre and right wing voters to consider them, the pets in rentals thing is not a winning policy. I think those renters are voting NDP already.

Vaccine hesitancy in Canadian parents (2017 survey so pre-COVID)

https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/s.../vaccine-hesitancy-canadian-parents.html

I didn't really pay any attention to the anti-vaccination crowd around measles but I never remember that being a hot button for conservatives. Or people into homeopathy which seems just as pseudo-science brainwashing as the anti-vax crowd.

Back in 2019: Ex-NDP leader Tom Mulcair featured at pro-homeopathy conference in Montreal

The same might be said of a large segment of condo owners who weren't happy with NDP decision to force every strata to allow rentals. I'm not sure if Kahlon was the genius behind that.

Great, every developer planning on building purpose-built rentals now has to factor recurring pet damage and odour deep cleaning into their cost analysis. Not to mention it's such free fodder for people to go, purpose built rentals first, private owner rentals next? What a loser policy, it's like the NDP went out looking for a hill to die on.

Yep. Bear in mind it was a novel technology at the time, they had to build the original OMC and headquarters, and the original Expo Line is pretty damn long.

There has always been a left wing segment that's been anti vax, but after Covid, it's largely become a conservative issue

Small funny fact, clearly the intern who made the PDF for the NDP is still using their university document naming techniques.

A winning formula would have involved on limiting the number of international students from coming into the region and going after PRIVATE "colleges."

The price of rental units along with used vehicles were low during COVID and it all went to hell when the Feds turned the taps on.

I have zero doubt the Cons at both levels will do anything to address immigration and migration into BC.

They needed some sort of breakthrough but instead have now solidly caved in their chances. Absolute boneheaded mistake.

Everyone we talk to, being a pet-friendly building is a given for new builds, from an Owner POV. I understand this isn't 100% of developers but I'm surprised myself over the years that they are into it

The Cons or NDP at the provincial level are unable to do jack about immigration - that's a federal thing. The lack of knowledge about what provincial governments can or can't do is another reason why the Cons have the lead for now.

Bingo. Canadian voters are very uneducated. Do we not teach civics in school at all? Sure feels that way

Well, not actually. There are always some levers to pull. Remember that the BC government put heavy restrictions on new international students earlier this year.

Of course, SFU had to lay off like 10% of the faculty as a result but alas...
