Some of us believe the Toronto Marlies will make the move into the renovated arena. It makes a lot of sense, though if they're not rebranded for the Hamilton market they would have a tough go.

Guaranteed a few hundred people will go to the wrong Rogers building. This is all actually quite idiotic of both Rogers and Live Nation.

That's why I posted the video, I had to go find out WTH Rogers Stadium was. They should tack the name of the city on the end. Rogers Arena Vancouver, Rogers Centre Toronto etc but they wouldn't want anything to detract from the brand. And I suppose if they had two venues in a city it wouldn't help.

Agreed. Even if it's in the same City, it could work. Rogers Centre Toronto Waterfront. Rogers Stadium Toronto Downsview. People would still need to say Rogers to identify the stadiums, unlike if you called it the Rogers Skydome, then people would revert back to Skydome. Though out of respect for the City and its history, keeping Skydome would have been appreciated.

I really hope Rogers and Scotiabank actually lose money with these naming rights. I'm personally even more motivated to keep my business elsewhere.

It's going to be terrible. When I Googled Rogers Stadium to ensure I had the right name, a majority of the links were for Rogers Centre. Really makes me wonder why Live Nation would accept Rogers as the sponsor when they know it will cause confusion and controversy.

I don't see the upside for MLSE in moving their team from an arena they run to a competing management company's arena. There might be a short term attendance bump from people wanting to check out the revamped "Copps" but after that, Hamilton will just revert to the same old same old as far as support goes. The Marlies have exceeded the Bulldogs highest seasonal average attendance in their history at Copps 8 times in the last 13 seasons and 2 of those other 5 seasons were Covid related. There isn't really a lot to sell MLSE on why moving the team to Hamilton makes sense.

You raise good points to question such a move.

By moving, would they aim to become the bigger fish in the smaller pond? Would MLSE want to sell the team? Is the city of Toronto happy with the current management arrangement at the Exhibition Place arena?

I don't know. The article did say "new team" but does that mean net new to the AHL, or new to Hamilton?

I guess we have a few months waiting to find out.

Although not hockey, the Toronto Rock kept their name when they moved to Hamilton and the impact on attendance has been relatively minor (~1K> decrease in attendance).

Many Hamiltonians are still bitter about that too. I believe the team said something about keeping "Toronto" in the name for a while, but we'll see. With them playing in Mississauga next season during the arena renos, it can wait.

Nothing would surprise me any more. I don't know what the Marlies would be worth today, enough to make a difference to Rogers in trying to recoup a bit of cash out of their takeout of Bell? I doubt it's even a drop in the bucket. The expense of the team is likely the players and the Leafs still pay them regardless who owns the team. Maybe being the Leafs AHL team might make a difference in fan support compared to previous Hamilton AHL teams. Anyway, I tossed a couple ideas around in a post last night a page or 2 back now. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Maple Leafs will NOT sale the Marlies, as of now I think most NHL teams own the Ahl teams (there might less the 4 teams that are not owned by their NHL team, and it also doesn’t make sense since they manage Coca Cola coliseum to let go of a tenant
