Report: Downtown Miami To Aventura Rail Line Sees Cost Increases By 72%

The Northeast Corridor rail line planned between MiamiCentral and Aventura was originally estimated to cost $538M.

Now, the estimated cost has increased 72% to $927M, according to the SFBJ.

FDOT has agreed to increase funding for the project, the report said.

Originally, FDOT had committed $103.5m toward the project, (the remainder was to come from Miami-Dade and the federal government).

Miami-Dade sought an $236.47M in additional funding from FDOT following the cost increase. In response, FDOT said it will provide up to $200m in total funding, subject to legislative approval of the agency’s work program.

Miami Dade’s website currently lists the project cost at $682 million.

Earlier this year, the Biden Administration recommended the project receive $263.7 million in federal funding.

The 13.5 mile line is expected to be under construction by the end of next year, with a total of seven stations upon completion. An extension to Fort Lauderdale also being planned separately by Broward County...........................

Baylink transit linking Miami Beach-Miami rolling ahead

A Baylink transit line between Miami and Miami Beach that has been a 40-year dream has cleared objections of the City of Miami Beach and a National Environmental Policy Act Review for an elevated Metromover on the MacArthur Causeway and is moving ahead.

“We plan on moving this project forward expeditiously,” Josiel Ferrer-Diaz, deputy director and chief project delivery officer of the Miami-Dade Department of Transportation and Public Works, told the Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust last week.

The trust would provide funds to meld with federal money for the new route, whose cost has been pegged at $1 billion to connect with downtown Miami’s Metromover on a one-seat ride to Miami Beach. A later segment of Baylink is to run from downtown to the Design District.

The US Coast Guard, which is the lead federal agency on the project because it would pass over Biscayne Bay to link the cities, “won’t seek any changes under the [environmental policy] act, which is good news,” Mr. Ferrer-Diaz told the trust.

Yes, it will be free. You can ride on metromover. Free of charge. And for metrorail, you have pay to ride on the metrorail from Government Center station.

Miami-Dade is advancing with plans to extend the Metromover to South Beach, according to Miami Today.

The county plans to move forward “expeditiously” with the project, according to Josiel Ferrer-Diaz, who is the Deputy Director of Miami-Dade’s Department of Transportation and Public Works.

The comments were made at a meeting of the Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust.

Plans are moving forward despite a vote by Miami Beach’s Commission opposing the project.

The city does not have control over the route or mode of transit to be built. However, the city vote did delay the start of construction as the county looks to consider that feedback, the report said.

The project has also passed federal environmental review without needing changes, the report said.

I seriously don't understand the Miami Beach City Commission's continuous
opposition to the Baylink extension. From what I read about 14k passengers use the public Buses & trolleys to cross the MacArthur Causeway daily.
With figures that high it's enough to warrant a Rail Line in other cities!

I'm in favor of extending a transit link from Miami to Miami Beach, but it would have to be the Metrorail, a monorail, or at-grade light rail. If you can build a Metromover extension, you can build a Metrorail extension to Miami Beach. It's not hard!
