The column in that corner view was where I was lamenting not knowing about the column at air Canada park being available.

Don’t worry. It’s full steam ahead on both. The tower is all Corten steel. Daring move. Have I mentioned that I have the best client.

This all sounds promising but with all the cool developments that have fallen through the cracks in recent years, I refuse to get excited until shovels are in the ground... (remembers 300 Saint Mary) ... scratch that, until residents have moved in.

Ha ha. I love that it makes people mad. You either love it or hate it. But nobody is indifferent.

To me it’s beautiful. So much more life and personality than prefinished metal or whatever. I think if we weren’t socially trained to think rust is bad, people would like it more.

That’s true. I used to think the pile driver was the safe zone. Not anymore.

I'm a fan of corten steel but have really only seen it used as accents on buildings. I did a quick google of "corten steel tower" and I have to say it looks pretty awesome used as the main cladding:

It looks cool till it bleeds down rust rivers that stain the side of the building and sidewalks around the perimeter. Plus if you brush up against it, it leaves a nasty present on your clothes.

Check out 710 Westminster for a cautionary tale.

Hmm so it's not without its problems then. However I imagine trueviking is aware of the bleed and took that into consideration. From what he described it sounds like a 6 storey brick podium with the corton steel tower rising atop it. So there might not be any steel at street level or any run off at street level. A full set of renderings would really help answer these questions haha

That's really bold. really excited to see this. I especially like corten steel with tall, narrow vertical windows for some reason so hopefully It has some of those

Is the tower quite slim? or on the bulky side?

I’ve seen that. Bad detailing. You just need to be aware of it and design for ir. On the Corten arch building on Des Meurons we have loose stone at the base where it hits the ground. I’m likely not going to bring it to the ground in many locations to avoid those issues.

I know you love buildings, Drew, but you should stop hugging them.

Winnipeg Hydro had the same problem with rust stains when they tried the Corten lamp poles downtown. A few city councilors complained and they were replaced with the galvanized ones.

Manitoba Hydro installed Corten on the original part of Abinojii Mikanah and there is nothing to worry about staining in the ditch line.

Will the Market Lands buildings connect to the underground pedestrian network that links the Museum, Concert Hall, City Hall, etc.? I suspect the walkway to the old Public Safety Building still runs underneath King Street to the Market Lands site.

I haven't seen the plans but I'm guessing not. There doesn't seem to be any underground work being done on the building currently under construction.

that tunnel does still exist, but it's not in great shape.....the cost of fixing it, connecting it, and maintaining it long term was not one that the project could take on.
