Ford government to restrict new bike lanes in bid to ease gridlock
The transportation minister did not deny media reports that the Progressive Conservative government is considering a move to bar municipalities from building new bike lanes if they result in the removal of vehicle lanes.

Taking aim at bike lanes, Premier Doug Ford’s government is planning to introduce legislation next month that
would limit the construction of new ones by overriding municipal powers in a controversial effort to ease gridlock.
The measure is one of several, including 24x7 construction for new highway projects like the 413 from Milton to Highway 400, in the proposed “Reducing Gridlock and Saving You Time Act,” sources told the Star on Friday.
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria was circumspect when asked about the
plan to block the construction of new bike lanes if they result in the loss of other lanes to cars, trucks and other traffic.
Ford, who lives in Etobicoke, has frequently been critical of the expansion of bike lanes in Toronto and has previously been criticized for meddling in municipal affairs, such as cutting the size of Toronto city council in half shortly after taking office in 2018 and in the midst of that year’s local election campaig
