Pretty crazy that the mall was only ~25-30 years old or so. Sunset Place was the place to be for youngins like myself in the late 90's-early 2000s. It was doomed by being sandwiched between Dadeland Mall, Cocowalk and Merrick Park and mostly by being dependent on the younger crowds of teens and students from nearby UM who hang out but generally don't spend much money.

By the way, there is another massive redevelopment project going on on the opposite side of US-1 where South Miami is redeveloping its City Hall area with a $309 million redevelopment:
