What a wacky looking ferry. I can't imagine how fast it would have to go for them to think that aerodynamic shape was worth it.

Yep, the incredible MV Kalakala. They got over 30years of service out of her! Ended her working career as a land-based shrimp cannery, refloated and taken back to Seattle for restoration only to eventually be scrapped relatively recently, in 2012.

Unfortunately old ferries are rarely saved for historical purposes. Just too costly and take up too much land/dock space i guess.

Reminds me of the Princess Mary - where the above deck structure was converted to a restaurant and put on land by the shipyard in Victoria in the 1950’s but eventually demolished 13 years ago as they began to build out Dockside Green.

Postcard: Princess Mary Restaurant, Victoria, BC, c.1950s by Rob, on Flickr

The back of this postcard reads:

The PRINCESS MARY RESTAURANT VESSEL, now noted for her world famous food, played an important part in British Columbia's history. Built in 1910 in Scotland, this sturdy vessel plied the Pacific coastal waters for over 40 years. She was often the only link between island villages, lonely towns and the outside world. Retired in 1952, you can still sense the part she played in the life of the people of this province.

Farewell Princess Mary by Rob, on Flickr

Unfortunate part is that the rest of the ferry was converted to a barge after they took the top off and “While under tow by the Canadian tug Chelan from Skagway, Territory of Alaska, to Vancouver with a cargo of silver, lead, and zinc ore concentrates, she was lost when Chelan sank on April 15, 1954, with the loss of all 14 people aboard off the entrance to Sumner Strait approximately 4 nautical miles (7.4 km; 4.6 mi) west of Cape Decision in Southeast Alaska.”

To the tourist info centre by the inner harbour (do most cities still have such centres? I feel like they’re becoming a thing of the past with budget cuts and info available online).

Awesome pics!

My opinion that Victoria and Quebec City are the two most beautiful cities in Canada solidifies more every year as I see the pics come in on SSP.

Thanks Metro-One! Yes, Victoria is a walker and photographer dream location.

I had a brain cramp and mislabeled some pics above Uplands Golf Course, while of course it’s the Victoria Golf Club.

While I’m here I’ll drop a couple more, the first a Kenmore Air plane from Seattle with the Clipper in the background, a high speed catamaran ferry that also goes to Seattle.

Great architecture and scale in Stockholm. However based on pictures that have been posted on SSP and streetview tours I've done it seems to have a bit of a "cold" vibe - can't quite place it. Despite the stereotypes I found Copenhagen to be simultaneously cozy and a bit disheveled (in good, vibrant way). There was a perceptible change when you crossed the Øresund, though I didn't make it to Stockholm.

Yeah, seems like Copenhagen has a lot more bright primary colours while Stockholm seems to be mainly whites, pastels and neutrals. Maybe not the best approach for a city further north than Churchill.

Copenhagen old town is bright but a lot of the city is much brickier than Stockholm, more like an Amsterdam/Hamburg/London palette.

It's Stockholm that uses more of the pastel stucco throughout the inner city.

Vibe-wise, though?

This is how it is, the city has that feel. This is its personality.

On a good day, to me, it feels a bit like the soundtrack from Lost In Translation – sleek and dreamy. On the other kind of day, it's like the characters – detached, adrift and alienated.

^ loved the Stockholm pictures.
Interestingly, having been to both (admittedly several times to Stockholm vs only once to Copenhagen) I found Stockholm more approachable and warm, but maybe I'm the outlier.
The harbour view from the edge of Sodermalm (Mariatorget?), the Djurgarden, crossing the parliament gateway into Gamla Stan -- I didn't get anything approaching these in Cph. Maybe I need to go back.

Great shots everyone! Toronto still in a league of its own, both by skyline pics from afar and street level. But all of the cities represented really have their own place, no need for competition when our cities are so geographically varied, they can just do their own thing and hopefully do it well.

The Surrey shots were really good, showing the advance of the urban downtown but also how much more room there is for growth, it's pretty wild to imagine it built out more, I really am curious how high the population could reach. If you ever look at the Surrey GIS map, there is still a lot of land left to develop in many parts of Surrey, namely between the Serpentine River and Langley (and it isn't ALR, just older houses with acreage, the prime candidates for redevelopment which has already been happening, and will continue until all of the old low density land is developed). Then a lot in South Surrey, plus the densification of the central city, which has tons of redevelopment left, it will take years to build out fully with this kind of density. It will be interesting to see how big it will really get to, but I see the development boom continuing based on the scarcity of land in all the other big Metro Van cities, Surrey is still way easier to build in.

Two photos made me laugh. In the 3rd pic, I spotted a Spirit Halloween banner up already lol, I didn't think they start advertising this early anywhere! Then the 7th pic, with the absolutely bizarre location for that liquor store. I assume it is a back entrance but even still, it's the only store, it is basically a service alley+parking lot plus back service doors, so random. Surprised the city allowed this access, and allowed a sign as well. Often cities restrict a secondary back entrance depending on where the back is located. Especially for something like a liquor store, it's very Surrey haha: shiny new urban development, but keep it a bit hood lol

The Exhibition, August 29th (Toronto)

I don't meant to distract too much from the theme of posting from various cities, but I wanted to share a few pictures I took during the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) in Toronto.

Saskatoon looks so sweet!...and the Baydo tower, admittedly looks half decent from a distance.
I'd love to do a weekender visit sometime!

Catching up on some great photo threads

Firstly, Toronto Drew - yes Victoria is very laid back. I'm guessing perhaps St. John's might be similar, although it seems to have more frenetic energy and the climate perhaps doesn't lead to a similar laid back-ness, although being on an island helps in both cases. Interesting that when I went to Toronto in May, as a Victorian I was expecting it to be more chaotic and fast paced, but it really was quite pleasant except for vehicle traffic.

Arrdee - beautiful patio you have there in Halifax! Ever thought of hosting an SSP meetup and your place?

GeneralLee - very cool artsy photos of the CNE! Looking at them on my big iMac screen really brings them to life.

Echoes - fantastic mix of Saskatoon shots - as always I appreciate photos of residential areas and interesting homes. And that river valley/bankside so lush - is there a nicer big river that runs through downtown in Canada than that? Edmonton's is nice, but the river itself is a bit muddier and lazier, lol. Speaking of muddy, you have the 'chocolate river' in Moncton, and while not 'pretty' it really is quite cool and something to check out for sure.

Great set of photos Martin - one day soon I'll bring my camera and have a field day (week) here! I've been enjoying the videos that Ken Continuum has posted from here recently.
