Yep.

In this climate it's always tough to tell on those older buildings whether it was intentional or not though.

When CF demo'd the Sears downtown for the Nordstrom building there was a ~20' tall tree on it that was never planted.

The next generation of Star Trek is currently being filmed at the CIGI Campus in Waterloo. The cast and crew of “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” will be in the Uptown area all week. Several signs near the parking lot refer to the production as “Ivory Tower.”

Kitchener x 2

@emphurent 08-29-2024

The podium design from the north will be very oppressive (see below). I like the massing matches the factory block, but the flourishes should've leaned way more in that direction.

A one sided canyon is forming.

It's just incredible how much Kitchener, alongside Waterloo and Cambridge have grown over the last twenty years, let alone ten.

The above statement always puzzles me. It's 100% true. It's the reality the situation. There's no surprise in it. 1 in 40 people weren't here the year prior and those are for counted people. They are settling in existing urban centres over new master planned cities like in Asia. A lot of Canadian cities are going to see "incredible" growth and in the form of showboxes as tall and wide as allowed.

Zibi apartments on the waterfront are making a positive impact but, the replacement glass on Place du Portage is a massive downgrade skyline wise. Grey spandrel and, worse, matches the Eddy office tower. Is everything meant to be replaced by that curtain glass?

I think you may be further disappointed because my hunch is that the refurbished Terrasses de la Chaudière complex to the west (left on the photo) will look basically the same as well.

I agree with you BTW.

Oh yeah, does look identical from afar. From up close, Portage's glass is different, including a bird safe design that mimics the vertical blinds that have been a staple of Portage for 50 years.

I agree that variety is being lost in favour of modern glass designs, everywhere. Portage is one thing, but losing the red brick of Chaudière for more glass is far worse imo. Chaudière is also overall a notch lesser quality.

At this point, only Chaudière (the entire complex) Portage III is being rehabed. We don't have any concepts for the next phases.

Bit of a Jersey City vibe to Gatineau's new look.

Gatineau is my least favorite skyline in Canada.

It has a very depressing feel IMO.

Winnipeg is always nice to see!

It will dramatically improve with the reclad projects and the new third tallest tower that is almost at grade now, the 26s W/E3. There are a handful of nice residential projects going up as well in the 6-14s range that will bulk it up and even it out.

The really important changes in the coming years will be the remaining towers in the Zibi project, and whatever Brigil is cooking up. It's well known Brigil wants a signature tower in the 55 story range with an observation deck overlooking Parliament.
